<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; In this Times Leader file photo, a woman is carried from flood water on East Northampton Street in 1972. The flood was caused by Tropical Storm Agnes and June 23 marks the 44th anniversary of one of the most memorable natural disasters.</p><p>In a special report printed by the Times Leader, former publisher, Richard Connor, wrote, &#8220;The Agnes Flood of 1972 can easily be described as one of our area&#8217;s worst moments and just as easily as one of our finest hours.</p><p>&#8220;There is much to be proud of in the story chronicling the fight to come back from the devastation of Agnes. The strength and character of this area&#8217;s people stand out and so does the energy these people applied to rebuild the area.</p><p>&#8220;Wilkes-Barre, with its vibrant downtown, stands as the best testimony to that energy. There are other examples of the tremendous rebirth and reconstruction since the flood.&#8221;</p><style>
