WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is trying to salvage an ambitious experiment to confront rising drug costs. Testifying before a Senate committee, a top Medicare official hinted Tuesday that the administration is weighing modifications to its ambitious plan for revamping payment for medications administered in a doctor's office. Affected are most chemotherapy drugs, as well as injected and infused medications for macular degeneration, rheumatoid arthritis, some immune diseases and other conditions. Cancer doctors want the plan scrapped. Medicare Deputy Administrator Patrick Conway said his agency is looking closely at public comments it has received, and officials will determine if any adjustments are needed before the plan is finalized. He said the areas Medicare is reviewing include the nationwide scope of the experiment, and its impact on rural areas and small medical practices.
