Charges filed after man allegedly tried to swallow crack cocaine

<p>PLAINS TWP. &#8212; He sat there with his crisp white Cincinnati Reds cap, greeting each fan at Mohegan Sun Pocono with a firm handshake and a large grin.</p><p>Yes, there was still some that told Pete Rose his time is coming, that one day he&#8217;ll stand on the steps in Cooperstown for his induction into Major League Baseball&#8217;s Hall of Fame.</p><p>Yet, Rose already feels like he&#8217;s won. He&#8217;s already in a hall of fame and its one that means the most to him.</p><p>Last weekend, the all-time baseball great who is serving a lifetime ban from the game was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. His No. 14 jersey was also retired.</p><p>&#8220;It was big for me simply because I&#8217;m from Cincinnati,&#8221; Rose said. &#8220;That&#8217;s my hometown.&#8221;</p><p>Rose was in Plains Township Saturday as part of Mohegan Sun Pocono&#8217;s Sun Stakes racing event. While Rose was signing autographs in the lobby, it was a big night on the track as Pocono hosted three $500,000 races (Ben Franklin, Earl Beal Jr. Memorial and Max C. Hempt Memorial) in addition to the $300,000 James M. Lynch Memorial.</p><p>&#8220;I hope it&#8217;s as big as last year,&#8221; said Rose, who was also in town for the 2015 Sun Stakes. &#8220;It was a lot of fun. The track here is so beautiful, and you see some great horses &#8211; especially tonight with some of these high-stakes races. The big race has three or four really nice horses. It&#8217;s always a pleasure to come to a place like this. Did you see the crowd out there? It&#8217;s impressive. I know that Scranton and Wilkes-Barre aren&#8217;t the biggest cities in the country, but they are really here to support this night.&#8221;</p><p>It&#8217;s always the lingering question.</p><p>Will Rose ever get into the MLB Hall of Fame?</p><p>It&#8217;s the elephant in the room: one of the greatest hitters to ever play the game kept out of the hall for gambling on the game of baseball.</p><p>Commissioner Rob Manfred, in December 2015, again denied Rose&#8217;s application for reinstatement to the game.</p><p>Despite the ruling, there was a different feel Saturday with fans passing along tons of congratulatory comments.</p><p>Rose&#8217;s homecoming was called &#8220;14 Forever.&#8221; Last Saturday, the 1976 World Series team was honored as Reds&#8217; players and coaches wore throw-back jerseys to honor the team.</p><p>&#8220;An amazing event,&#8221; Rose said. &#8220;That was the 40th anniversary of the Big Red Machine sweeping the Yankees. We were all together with the exception of Gary Nolan and Joe Morgan.&#8221;</p><p>The rest of the weekend belonged to Rose and apparently last weekend&#8217;s festivities was just the start.</p><p>&#8220;Next year, I get a statue,&#8221; Rose said. &#8220;I can&#8217;t tell you which one was bigger &#8211; going into the Hall of Fame on a Saturday, getting the number retired on Sunday or the announcement about the statue. If we were at the racetrack, it would be 1, 1A and 1B. They are all that important. You have to understand the love relations I have with the city of Cincinnati and the fans there. You have to really understand that to know what was going through my mind during that weekend. We had three standing-room only crowds that day. It was great for the ballclub, too.&#8221;</p><p>Rose joked there&#8217;s only one other guy that could steal his thunder in his hometown and that&#8217;s all-time great and fellow Cincinnati native, Barry Larkin.</p><p>&#8220;Cincinnati is a special place for us because we were born there and we learned how to play the game of baseball there,&#8221; Rose said. &#8220;Those fans, they are great. I don&#8217;t know what else to say. They liked the way that I played. I never tried to cheat them. I gave them my all in every at-bat, and this is kind of payback. I hope that they appreciated the way that we played on the Big Red Machine, and how I played individually.&#8221;</p><p>Rose still loves the game and has no problem talking about it.</p><p>He&#8217;s quick to point out the top talent, calling Detroit&#8217;s Miguel Cabrera the best pure hitter in the game. He talks about how much of a surprise Miami has been this year, and how teams like Kansas City, Detroit and the Mets haven&#8217;t lived up to expectations.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m in Las Vegas, 15 to 20 days a month for four-and-a-half hours a day, signing autographs for fans and talking about baseball,&#8221; Rose said. &#8220;It&#8217;s like I get to play a doubleheader every day, but I don&#8217;t make any outs. I&#8217;m just sitting there talking about the wonderful game of baseball and all of the up-and-coming talent there is, and what&#8217;s going on in the game. There are a lot of great players, but I don&#8217;t think there are any great teams. There are some teams that are playing fantastic ball right now, and just some bad teams. The parity just isn&#8217;t there like it has been in the last few years.&#8221;</p><style>
