St. Jude’s Science Fair winners are announced

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; People lamented the postponement of the Hillary Clinton/Joe Biden campaign event Friday, but agreed it was the right thing to do.</p><p>Others argued, many held out hope the event would be reset, as rumored, for Sunday. However, the Clinton campaign could not confirm any plan to reschedule the event any time soon.</p><p>This is what the campaign released Friday morning:</p><p>&#8220;Due to the tragic events in Dallas, the July 8 Hillary for America campaign event with Vice President Biden will be postponed. Details on rescheduling the event will be provided as soon as possible.&#8221;</p><p>The venue &#8212; Riverfront Sports on Olive Street &#8212; was prepared to welcome up to 6,000 supporters. A huge American flag was hung behind the stage where Clinton, the presumptive Democratic candidate for president, would stand at the podium and talk about bringing jobs to Northeastern Pennsylvania.</p><p>Two large banners &#8212; &#8220;Stronger Together&#8221; &#8212; also were hung in anticipation of Clinton&#8217;s appearance with Vice President Biden.</p><p>But at about 8:30 a.m. Friday, citing the tragic killing of five police officers in Dallas, Texas, the event was postponed.</p><p>Mike Vacendak, owner of Riverfront Sports since 2004, was disappointed when the campaign contacted him to postponed the event.</p><p>&#8220;They told me they are working on rescheduling it,&#8221; Vacendak said. &#8220;Not too many people have come in to ask about it.&#8221;</p><p>Outside, several people talked about the postponement. Many had arrived not knowing the rally was postponed.</p><p>Reva Goodall, of Springfield, Illinois, drove in with Lou Anne Lowder, of Waverly, Illinois, arriving Thursday night.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re here for Hillary,&#8221; Goodall said. &#8220;We drove to Iowa in 2008 to see her.&#8221;</p><p>Lowder said a decision to reschedule the Scranton event would have to be made soon for them to stick around.</p><p>&#8220;Adele is in Chicago on Monday and we have tickets,&#8221; she said, referring to the English singer/songwriter.</p><p>Everyone at the site understood Clinton&#8217;s reason to cancel her appearance, but all were disappointed they wouldn&#8217;t have the opportunity to see and hear her in person and show their support.</p><p>&#8220;What&#8217;s not to like about her?&#8221; Goodall asked. &#8220;We are tried and true Democrats and I&#8217;m scared to death for this country if the alternative gets elected.&#8221;</p><p>That alternative candidate is Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate for the presidency and Clinton&#8217;s likely opponent in November. Scranton businessman Bob Bolus had his Trump for President truck positioned at the entrance to the Riverfront Sports complex.</p><p>Patricia Puorro, of Mayfield, is supporting Trump. She carried a sign that read: &#8220;Butcher of Benghazi&#8221; &#8212; a reference to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the American diplomatic compound by Islamic militants that occurred while Clinton was Secretary of State. Puorro also had a Trump &#8220;Make America Great Again&#8221; hat.</p><p>&#8220;Donald Trump wants to unite everybody,&#8221; Puorro said. &#8220;Especially the military and our veterans. I can go on and on, but I have a doctor&#8217;s appointment at 2 p.m. The Democrats don&#8217;t care about the little guy.&#8221;</p><p>Puorro said Trump &#8220;is not a politician&#8221; and he &#8220;can&#8217;t be bought.&#8221; She said even Republicans fear Trump because he won&#8217;t &#8220;play their game.&#8221;</p><p>A Clinton supporter challenged Puorro and the two got into a heated exchange on an already 90-plus degree, humid day.</p><p>Salome Johnson, 69, and Alana Haag, 68, both of York, didn&#8217;t know the event was postponed until they arrived at Riverfront Sports.</p><p>&#8220;Hillary is the most qualified candidate I&#8217;ve seen in my lifetime,&#8221; said Johnson, a retired Manhattan hospital administrator.</p><p>Johnson first got involved with politics at the young age of 6, later volunteering at a phone bank when she was 13.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a New York City bleeding heart liberal,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;ll come back Sunday if she comes back.&#8221;</p><p>Haag said she has great respect for Clinton, citing her lifetime dedication to politics and government service.</p><p>&#8220;The other candidate is trying to turn people into egocentric isolationists,&#8221; said Haag, a retired high school business teacher.</p><p>Johnson said if Trump wins, she will consider moving to Europe.</p><p>&#8220;As a woman of color, I would never feel safe in this country with Trump as president,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Keith McCray, of Columbus, Ohio, arrived with six nieces and nephews and 150 tee shirts that said, &#8220;Making History.&#8221; He said Clinton&#8217;s entire presidency would be about making history.</p><p>U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, agreed with Clinton&#8217;s decision to cancel the event.</p><p>&#8220;Due to the violent events yesterday, I thought it was respectful of Hillary and Vice President Biden to forgo the rally this morning.&#8221;</p><p>Clinton was expected to talk about several issues, including her detailed plan to bring jobs to Pennsylvania and, specifically, Northeastern Pennsylvania.</p><style>
