Our Opinion: At 70, Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction remains a point of pride

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The daily meal at the Wyoming Valley Rescue Mission was interrupted on Friday when the facility was hit with a significant plumbing problem.</p><p>Chaplain Wayne Morgan said the floors and walls of the facility, which is located at the troubled Sherman Hills Apartment Complex, suffered water damage because of the problem, and the mission could not serve the meal scheduled for Friday inside.</p><p>However, Morgan said, Christians have been commanded by Jesus to feed the hungry, not just when they have a dry cool room to do so.</p><p>Morgan&#8217;s solution &#8212; he moved the meal outside.</p><p>Tables were set up and more than 50 attendees were able to enjoy a meal of chicken, beans and salad. And, of course, dessert.</p><p>There was even dinner music.</p><p>&#8220;What might you like to hear?&#8221; Morgan asked.</p><p>And when someone answered &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221; that&#8217;s what was sung.</p><p>In the past years, the mission has been surrounded by shootings, domestic incidents, drug arrests and other turmoil that has occurred at the apartment complex.</p><p>But operations manager John Gleason said he was hard pressed to remember any significant incidents at the mission itself, at least until its plumbing gave out Friday.</p><p>The mission houses a drug rehabilitation/life skills program in addition to inviting community members into the facility for music and a meal four days a week.</p><p>&#8220;I like the atmosphere here,&#8221; said Anthony Fierro, one of the attendees for Friday&#8217;s dinner. &#8220;I like the people here.&#8221;</p><p>Fierro once ran his own company, but now works for a temp agency. He said he is happy to have an opportunity to continue to work and live in the community.</p><p class="p1">&#8220;I had three kids, and they&#8217;re all doing well,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I got divorced, but it was amicable.</p><style>
