PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The former principal of a Philadelphia elementary school who pleaded guilty in a test cheating scandal has been sentenced to 10 years of probation. Sixty-one-year-old Evelyn Cortez pleaded guilty in February to criminal conspiracy, perjury and evidence-tampering. She was sentenced Monday to seven years of probation on the conspiracy and tampering counts and a consecutive three years of probation on the perjury count. Prosecutors said the former principal of Cayuga Elementary School in the Hunting Park neighborhood helped young children cheat on standardized tests by changing answers and reviewing questions beforehand. They said some teachers were berated for not taking illegal steps to boost scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exams. Cortez was also ordered to do 100 hours of community service and her teaching certificate was revoked.
