Defensive gems lift Back Mountain juniors to district title

<p>Hunter Kline hit a three-run homer in extra inning to lift Northwest to a dramatic 5-2 win over St. Mary&#8217;s in the Little League state junior softball tournament on Thursday.</p><p>Kline&#8217;s shot came in the eighth inning to secure a second win for Northwest in the bracket. Trista Babcock had a triple, Nikki Cragle added a double and a single while Brenna Babcock had two singles. Cragle also pitched two innings and Aleigha Parnell threw six innings.</p><p>For St. Mary&#8217;s, Maddie Bowes and Brittany Shaw each had two singles while Tessa Grotzinger and Allison &#8220;Pete&#8221; Schlimm singled. Maura Fledderman pitched for St. Mary&#8217;s.</p><p><strong>DISTRICT 16</strong></p><p><strong>10-11 BASEBALL</strong></p><p><strong>South Wilkes-Barre 4,</strong></p><p><strong>Plains 2</strong></p><p>After allowing two runs in the first inning, South Wilkes-Barre halted Plains to advance to the district finals. Cael Ropietski was the winning pitcher and also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double. Eli Ropietski also doubled and Dilan Veras and Charlie Revitt each singled.</p><p>For Plains, Sean Monahan went 2 for 3 with a double and Braeen Cook added a single.</p><p>South Wilkes-Barre will play in the District 16 championship against Mountain Top on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Nanticoke.</p><p><strong>DISTRICT 16</strong></p><p><strong>JUNIOR BASEBALL</strong></p><p><strong>Hanover 13, Plains 6</strong></p><p>In the elimination bracket final, Hanover advanced thanks to strong pitching performances from Hunter Thompson and Joe Rowley. In addition to being the winning pitcher, Thompson also had a double. Justin Stefanowicz had two doubles for Hanover, Jordan Stefanski had two hits and Jamie Cunard and Evan Materna each had a hit.</p><p>Hanover will play Pittston at the Rock Street Field in Pittston on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a double-elimination championship round.</p><style>
