<p>With high temperatures across the region routinely topping 80 degrees, and predicted later this week to exceed 90, thoughts turn to staying cool.</p><p>If you intend to beat this heat in a swimming pool, or other body of water, by all means, have fun. But be careful. Don&#8217;t allow a momentary lapse of judgment, or attention, to result in tragedy.</p><p>Children should be taught how to be safe around water, and they always should be supervised. Adults also should take precautions, such as avoiding alcoholic beverages before swimming or boating, and making sure everyone wears a life jacket when it&#8217;s appropriate.</p><p>&#8220;It only takes a few seconds and a few inches of water for a child to drown,&#8221; cautions Jay Kaplan, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians.</p><p>Drowning is the No. 1 cause of unintentional-injury deaths for children ages 1 to 4, with almost 400 deaths in 2014, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p><p>While the danger is especially high for children because they might not be as familiar with how to act in and around water, it poses a threat regardless of age. About 10 people die from drowning every day in the United States &#8211; making it the fifth-leading cause of death from unintentional injury. An average of two drowning victims a day are 14 years old and younger.</p><p>On Saturday, an 8-year-old boy reportedly was found unresponsive in the Crystal Pool at Knoebels amusement park near Elysburg. The child later died, and the cause of death remained under investigation early Monday.</p><p>Those who survive near-drowning incidents often require lengthy hospitalization or medical care.</p><p>The danger is not limited to deep lakes and pools. Young children have drowned in inflatable pools with only a few inches of water in them, because the youngsters often panic and don&#8217;t know how to react to save themselves. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the majority of drownings and near-drownings involve children being able to reach a pool, either where they live or where they were visiting, without being noticed.</p><p>Always be cautious around the water. It should be a place of sweet relief, not relentless grief.</p><style>
