HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Public safety issues including terrorism, illegal immigration and gun violence are shaping Pennsylvania'a closely watched U.S. Senate race. Republican incumbent Pat Toomey and his Democratic challenger Katie McGinty also are striving to show unity with police in response to the killings of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge. A new TV ad by Toomey claims McGinty supports President Barack Obama's Iran nuclear deal, moving Guantanamo Bay "terrorists" to U.S. prisons and allowing immigrant "sanctuary cities" such as Philadelphia. She does support the Iran nuclear deal, but McGinty says Toomey's Guantanamo Bay claim is "full of baloney" and she's urging Philadelphia's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Meanwhile, McGinty says she'd double the funding for the Justice Department's community policing program. She's points out that Toomey's voted against higher funding for the program. Toomey calls McGinty's plan a "political gimmick."
