Safety, security take stage in Pennsylvania's US Senate race

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A celebrated illustrator of more than 100 children's books is being honored in his native Philadelphia. The city's chief cultural officer said at a ceremony Tuesday illustrator Jerry Pinkney has inspired generations of youngsters. At the City Hall event Pinkney signed a copy of his book "The Lion and the Mouse," which will be displayed there. The book is an adaptation of Aesop's fable. Pinkney also received a collection of drawings made by children at a local camp who have studied his work. Pinkney says his hometown and African-American history play powerful roles in his career. He had his first art experience at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He received two lifetime achievement awards from the American Library Association this year.
