PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Civil rights lawyers have accused a third U.S. school district of denying older immigrant students a meaningful education by steering them to alternative high schools. The federal lawsuit filed Tuesday against the Lancaster School District in Pennsylvania involves refugees ages 17 to 21. They are from Myanmar, Sudan and other war-torn countries. The American Civil Liberties Union says the district has steered at least 30 students over three years to a disciplinary high school with fewer services and opportunities. Civil rights groups have filed similar lawsuits in Utica, New York, and Collier County, Florida. The Lancaster district in a statement calls the ACLU suit "without merit" and says it offers summer, after-school and other "cutting edge" programs for refugees. ___ This story has been corrected to say that the two similar lawsuits were filed by civil rights groups, not only the ACLU.
