<p>I am writing in response to the recent <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/opinion/letters/564831/letter-to-the-editor-response-to-trump-campaigns-use-of-six-pointed-star-exposes-liberals-paranoia" target="_blank"> letter to the editor</a> regarding the Donald Trump campaign&#8217;s use of a six-pointed star.</p><p>Children learn to recognize shapes early in life. Some children, before age 3, are able to distinguish between squares and rectangles, circles and ovals, etc.</p><p>Regarding Trump&#8217;s campaign tweet, suggesting the six-pointed star was a &#8220;plain star&#8221; or &#8220;sheriff&#8217;s badge,&#8221; preschoolers might have a thing or two to teach Trump staffers.</p><p>What is a &#8220;plain star?&#8221; In a Google search of &#8220;plain star,&#8221; the majority of images that appear are five-pointed stars. When people draw stars or purchase packets of star stickers, the stars usually have five points, not six.</p><p>As to Trump&#8217;s sheriff&#8217;s badge comment: A sheriff&#8217;s badge has small dots at the ends of the points. Omitting those dots in Trump&#8217;s graphic significantly changed the meaning of the symbol. Dots do make a difference, just as lengthening two opposite sides of a square changes the shape&#8217;s name and its features.</p><p>Details matter, as do symbols.
