LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — A new U.S. Postal stamp and local cancellation mark memorializing one of Latrobe's claims to fame was recently unveiled by Mayor Rosie Wolford and other officials. The Tribune-Review reports (http://bit.ly/2a2Ill4 ) the 47-cent "forever" stamp depicting a banana split is one of five in a series called "Soda Fountain Favorites" that was illustrated by a New York City artist. A Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker outside the site of the former Tassell Pharmacy proclaims Latrobe as the home of the "first documented banana split." Apprentice pharmacist David E. "Doc" Strickler concocted the first banana split at Tassell in 1904.
