HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The defense lawyer for ex-Pennsylvania Treasurer Barbara Hafer says charges for allegedly lying to federal agents are based on little more than her lapses in her memory. Lawyer John Knorr predicted Hafer will be exonerated. He declined to answer questions Friday, such as why federal agents interviewed Hafer. The charges filed this week stemmed from Hafer's May interview with FBI agents about payments to her consulting firm. The payments allegedly came from a businessman's firm that shared in asset management fees paid by the Treasury Department while Hafer was in office. The payments allegedly began just after Hafer completed her second term as treasurer in 2005. Prosecutors didn't accuse Hafer of wrongdoing in office. Prosecutors also charged businessman Richard Ireland with allegedly trying to bribe ex-state Treasurer Rob McCord with secret campaign contributions between 2009 and 2014.
