Pa. man cherishes 1952 Paterno recruiting letter

<p>DALLAS &#8212; Car enthusiasts gathered to help a local church fundraiser on Saturday.</p><p>The members from the Hi-Lites Motor Club based showcased their roadsters at the annual Summerfest at St. Paul&#8217;s Lutheran Church on Yalick Road.</p><p>More than 60 cars were displayed with pride by club members. They ranged from hot rods to antiques, dating from the 1920s to 1980s, including classics and stock cars. There were even models fashioned after television show cars.</p><p>Owners stood poised to discuss their vehicles with interested onlookers, and children chose their favorites to win trophies.</p><p>Ed Smith, president of the club, said the members enjoy participating in fundraising events throughout the season. He said the club has taken part in the St. Paul&#8217;s Summerfest for years.</p><p>&#8220;The members share a love of the automobile and are always happy to bring them out to help support charities in the Dallas area,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Earl Weidner, club member and event &#8220;master of ceremonies,&#8221; provided the musical entertainment. Visitors played music trivia, won door prizes, participated in a &#8220;kids raffle&#8221; and enjoyed the other festival activities.</p><p>&#8220;What makes this car club special is the camaraderie among the members,&#8221; Weidner said. &#8220;The are hot rods but no hot heads.&#8221;</p><p>The church contacted the club earlier this year asking for their help and the club members said yes.</p><p>Ray Mancke, chairperson of the Summerfest committee, was &#8220;very appreciative&#8221; of the motor club&#8217;s willingness to help.</p><p>&#8220;The cars are a great draw,&#8221; Mancke said. &#8220;They bring attention to the whole event.&#8221;</p><p>Several hundred visitors braved the heat to stop by. Mancke said the attendance outpaced last year and could have been higher if it wasn&#8217;t for the extreme heat.</p><p>Along with the car show, visitors talked with representatives from the Luzerne County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), learned about fire safety from the Shavertown Fire Company who brought its &#8220;fire house,&#8221; checked their health with healthcare professionals from Geisinger Health System and got involved in a &#8220;Cancer Walk.&#8221;</p><p>There was also live music, food, vendors and children&#8217;s activities among others.</p><p>&#8220;The Summerfest is a true community event where we raise awareness about local organizations,&#8221; Mancke said. &#8220;The car show is a big part of getting the visitors to come.&#8221;</p><style>
