<p>Recently, in response to the deaths of a corrections officer and an inmate at the Luzerne County prison, county Manager C. David Pedri stated that a new prison might be the solution to avoid another tragic incident.</p><p>Talk about jumping the gun; at least wait until a full investigation into what caused the elevator door to malfunction. This is like someone saying my back door is broken, I guess I need a new house.</p><p>The section of the prison where the elevator is located is fairly new, built in the 1980s. The county is buried in massive debt from years of corruption, mismanagement and wasteful spending, and our manager wants to add to the already overburdened taxpayers. Add this to the looming responsibility for funding a new school in Wilkes-Barre, and it becomes all too clear that this is a knee-jerk reaction from someone obviously oblivious to, or who could care less about, the taxpayers.</p><p>County council better take this with a grain of salt, and work on identifying the cause and fixing it. Maintenance is of the utmost importance in the home, institution or business. Poor maintenance practices for decades led to the demise of two schools in Wilkes-Barre.
