McGinty given chance to shine at DNC

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Area residents were able to enjoy a Dairy Queen Blizzard on Thursday while helping Children&#8217;s Miracle Network hospitals.</p><p>National Miracle Treat Day, a partnership between the Children&#8217;s Miracle Network and Dairy Queen, meant that for every Blizzard sold at least $1 would be donated to network hospitals.</p><p>Dairy Queens across the country participated.</p><p>Cheryl Lewis, general manager of the Kingston Dairy Queen, said the business went above and beyond in hosting the event.</p><p>&#8220;All of the profit from the sale of blizzards is being donated,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And we also have several dozen gift baskets, games, face painting and balloon animals, proceeds from which will also go to the Janet Weiss Children&#8217;s Hospital.&#8221;</p><p>Lewis said the event showed the commitment of the business to being a positive part of the community.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had &#8216;miracle kids&#8217; stop in,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So we can see firsthand the good that we are doing.&#8221;</p><p>Lewis said she and other employees have been to the hospital and have seen for themselves the excellent medical care it provides to children.</p><p>Victoria Smith, of Luzerne, said the event provided a chance to show her children how important it is to help others in need.</p><p>And although her sons &#8212; Eric, 4, and Jakoby, 10 months &#8212; might be too young to fully understand the importance of providing youngsters with medical care, they seemed to be truly enjoying a &#8220;light saber&#8221; balloon that made an eerily authentic noise.</p><p>Balloon maker T. J. Pelt said children of all ages had special requests, including flowers, animals and swords.</p><p>Pelt said people came to the event to have fun and because the event afforded them an opportunity to help others.</p><p>Eliana Parra, 10, seemed to be especially enjoying a game in which she aimed a weight through a series of holes.</p><p>Maria Parra, Eliana&#8217;s mother, said she was impressed with the enthusiasm of event staff, who not only manned the games, but made them fun.</p><p>Ellyssa Saroscek, of Plymouth, who was manning the face-painting booth, said she used to work at Dairy Queen and now returns as a volunteer.</p><p>&#8220;I enjoy this event,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The kids seem to want to be pirates this year.&#8221;</p><p>Store staff said although they worked hard throughout the day, it was worth it.</p><p>&#8220;We all talked about how excited we were,&#8221; one said. &#8220;This is a good day.&#8221;</p><p>According to Dairy Queen&#8217;s official website, last year over $5 million was raised for children&#8217;s hospitals in the United States and Canada.</p><style>
