Kids learn about fire safety at LCCC camp

<p>WYOMING &#8212; Dozens of children gathered Friday at the Wyoming Free Library for an Enchanted Forest themed carnival, which emphasized the value of reading for those 3 years of age and older.</p><p>Lindsay Rysz, who oversees the library&#8217;s &#8220;Tea, Tips and Treasures&#8221; program throughout the year, said the event, the last one of the series, was all about fun, as children lined up to play games and win prizes.</p><p>Even the snacks, which included &#8220;Pond Punch,&#8221; &#8220;Mud on a Stick,&#8221; &#8220;Forest Salad&#8221; and &#8220;Forest Trail Mix,&#8221; incorporated an outdoor theme.</p><p>Janelle Lee, of Swoyersville, had originally thought the program was only for girls and was delighted when she learned her three boys, 8, 6, and 3, could also participate.</p><p>&#8220;The boys first came out during the &#8216;Minions,&#8217; themed program,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And they loved it.&#8221;</p><p>Lee said her family visits the library often to participate in programs and pick out books.</p><p>As a mother, she said reading is very important to her.</p><p>&#8220;All the boys are right on track,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They pick out books here at the library and sometimes I pick out books for them.&#8221;</p><p>Son Brayden couldn&#8217;t contain his energy as he made his way to the lollipop and &#8220;let&#8217;s go fishing&#8221; games.</p><p>Lee said surrounding her children with books and opportunities for learning and creativity not only fills summer hours but makes it more likely they will do well in school</p><p>Library director John Roberts agrees.</p><p>&#8220;We have reading programs, books clubs and other opportunities for people of all ages,&#8221; he said. &#8220;In addition, we have computers available for use. We&#8217;re a community hub for learning and activity.&#8221;</p><p>Rysz came up with the program as an opportunity to give back to children.</p><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t have any children of my own,&#8221; she said, as she looked out at young participants truly enjoying the color and excitement of the event. &#8220;In a way, these are my children.&#8221;</p><p>Carefully selected themes throughout the year, including &#8220;Minions,&#8221; &#8220;Tiny Treasures&#8221; and &#8220;Going to the Zoo,&#8221; bring children to the library with their parents.</p><p>Mary Tirva travels from Duryea with her 6-year-old granddaughter, Sienna, citing the friendliness of library staff and the organization of activities.</p><p>&#8220;We come all year,&#8221; said Tirva. &#8220;As we keep coming back, she&#8217;s learning to read.&#8221;</p><p>Rysz is already looking forward to next month&#8217;s theme, &#8220;Camping Outdoors,&#8221; which will be the first of the next series.</p><style>
