<p>Now that the pep rallies are over (Republican and Democratic national conventions), I would like to make a proposal to both major political parties about the way that the U.S. executive, legislative and judicial branches operate.</p><p>1. An amendment providing for one six-year term for president. This way, the sitting president won&#8217;t start campaigning for his or her second term while only two years into the first term. This also would force voters to really evaluate who they want as their commander in chief, and who they want to be appointing our Supreme Court justices.</p><p>2. A reinterpretation of the 20th Amendment to include term limits for senators and representatives as follows: a <em>maximum</em> of 12 years in Congress. This could be six terms as a representative, two terms as a senator, or a split between three as a representative and one as senator. The Founding Fathers never intended on having &#8220;career politicians&#8221; (Dianne Feinstein, Harry Reid, Edward Kennedy, John McCain) serving decades in office.</p><p>3. Lastly, I would recommend the mandatory retirement age for Supreme Court justices be 70.</p><p>I conclude with a question: Why does it seem many Americans think that in order to be president a candidate must have an Ivy League pedigree?</p><p><strong>John Minetola</strong></p><p>Wilkes-Barre</p><style>
