Putting math in motion for SHINE after school program

<p>WEST PITTSTON &#8212; Tony Denisco may be gone, but his memory lives on in the borough.</p><p>At their monthly meeting on Tuesday, the borough members voted to adopt a resolution to name the municipal building the Anthony &#8220;Tony&#8221; Denisco Municipal Building.</p><p>Only a few days after Denisco <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/535631/tony-denisco-west-pittston-mayor-since-2011-passes-away" target="_blank">died</a> in April at the age of 73 due to health complications, council member Kevin Lescavage suggested the idea.</p><p>With the resolution now adopted, council president Brian Thornton said Denisco&#8217;s family will be invited to the September meeting to receive a plaque.</p><p>The sign in front of the building, he said, will also be changed in the near future.</p><p>Also at the meeting, council approved the motion to look into increasing rates for part-time police officers for the 2017 year.</p><p>&#8220;Our mayor, Tom Blaskiewicz, over the past month, received rates from neighboring towns and what they were paying their part time officers,&#8221; said Thornton. &#8220;We noticed our rate was lagging and we realized that if a part-time officer, locally, has a choice of going to town A and getting paid $1 an hour more or working in town B for $1 an hour less, most would choose A. That&#8217;s made it difficult at times to bring in part-time cops. We understand that now, and will raise the rates come January.&#8221;</p><p>In other business, the council members:</p><p>&#8226; Appointed Sgt. Michael Turner to the temporary position of Police Officer-In-Charge while current police chief Paul Porfirio deals with health issues.</p><p>&#8226; Awarded M. Mayo Striping of Falls $6,475 for the painting of crosswalks and stop bars.</p><p>&#8226; Accepted the resignation of crossing guard Harriet Truelove.</p><p>&#8226; Authorized an audit to be performed by a CPA firm to be selected at a later time to perform an independent audit for the accounts of West Pittston Hose Company No. 1</p><style>
