Holy Redeemer students earn Latin awards

<p>DALLAS TOWNSHIP &#8212; When Rosa and Morris Gershovitz bought a piano in the very early 1900s, they brought it into their New York City apartment the only way they could.</p><p>&#8220;It would have been ropes pulling the piano up the outside of the building,&#8221; their great-grandson Todd Gershwin explained. &#8220;Rather dramatic.&#8221;</p><p>Once the piano was safely inside the apartment on the city&#8217;s Lower East Side, Rosa and Morris expected their firstborn son, Ira, would start to play it.</p><p>But it was his younger brother, George, who seized the opportunity.</p><p>&#8220;The day they bought it George, having never played, sat down and started playing as if he were an accomplished pianist,&#8221; Gershwin said. &#8220;He just picked it up from all the music he heard in the neighborhood. Ironically, Ira never played piano and never learned to read music.&#8221;</p><p>That little anecdote about George and Ira Gershwin &#8212; they Americanized their family name &#8212; is the kind of story audience members can expect to hear if they attend &#8220;Rhapsody &amp; Rhythm: The Gershwin Concert Experience&#8221; Aug. 8 at Misericordia University.</p><p>The multimedia concert celebrates the music of the Gershwin brothers, who became famous for George&#8217;s compositions and Ira&#8217;s lyrics, and kicks off the university&#8217;s Under the Stars Summer Arts Festival.</p><p>Songs you can expect to hear include &#8220;I Got Rhythm,&#8221; &#8220; &#8216;S Wonderful,&#8221; and &#8220;They Can&#8217;t Take That Away From Me&#8221; as well as the &#8220;Rhapsody in Blue,&#8221; which Ira Gershwin wrote while traveling.</p><p>&#8220;He really wrote it on the train from New York to Boston,&#8221; said Todd Gershwin, who is a great-nephew of the prolific pair. &#8220;In a big part of &#8216;Rhapsody in Blue,&#8217; you can hear the clackety-clack of the train.&#8221;</p><p>Gershwin said it will be a treat for the audience to hear pianist and host Richard Glazier play his great-uncles&#8217; music and offer a glimpse into their lives.</p><p>&#8220;He knows the music and the stories and the legacies as well or better than anyone,&#8221; Gershwin said. &#8220;He has a great ability to communicate with an audience almost as if it were a one-on-one conversation.&#8221;</p><style>
