<p>SCRANTON &#8212; Thousands of people made their way, in high heat and humidity, up to the Pavilion at Montage Mountain and the surrounding grounds on Thursday for the opening day of the fifth annual Peach Music Festival.</p><p>Parking lots and campgrounds filled up early.</p><p>Beer, food and craft vendors had already taken their place around the Peach, Mushroom and Grove stages as well as in the camping areas as seas of tie-dyed music lovers awaited buses with loaded carts and bundles of necessities for the weekend. Energy and anticipation filled the water park area and Mushroom stage, as hot travellers cooled off, caught opening acts and discussed the performances they came to see.</p><p>The Primate Fiasco kicked off the musical festivities with their eccentric four-piece of banjo, accordion, tuba and drums. Their particular brand of big bandy stomp got the gathering crowd dancing, before they dove into a jazz number featuring their tuba player taking throaty solos.</p><p>As the audience thickened around the unique jam quartet, they closed their performance with &#8220;Wristband Tanline,&#8221; a colorfully written saga of being engulfed in a festival haze.</p><p>Their extended jam featured electric banjo playing that made the instrument emit funky electric guitar-sounding riffs, motivating the audience into lively two-steps.</p><p>Kristen Zylstra, of Lewistown, had just finished setting up camp with her closest friends and family, and her group took refuge from the sun under their pop-up tent before heading to hear some music.</p><p>Attending her fifth Peach Festival, Zylstra said she came to the 2016 gathering to see The Trey Anastasio Band, Moe., Cabinet and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong with her brother and daughter in tow.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve made this a family thing,&#8221; Zylstra said. &#8220;We love the water park. I can hang there with my kid, and we can still hear the music.&#8221;</p><p>Zylstra said she was looking forward to each of the bands she mentioned but was particularly excited for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong.</p><p>&#8220;We just saw them at Bear&#8217;s Picnic (in Millmont), and they were awesome.&#8221;</p><p>Shady Grove Wraps had tents set up in several vendor areas, including the campground. Owner and manager Bill Robel, of Catawissa, said his company has been in attendance for the Peach Festival since the inception. Shady Grove has toured numerous other large scale music events, including Catskill Chill in Lakewood and the Fare Thee Well Grateful Dead shows in Chicago.</p><p>&#8220;I think this is a great festival,&#8221; Robel said. &#8220;The water park sets it apart from every other festivals we do. The festival has grown each year we&#8217;ve been here, and the venue has gotten better with transportation. The layout is great. You have the ability to get out of the sun and cool off, and that&#8217;s going to be important this weekend.&#8221;</p><p>Scott Rubin travelled from Woodbridge, N.J., for his first Peach Festival.</p><p>&#8220;I usually go to the Philadelphia Folk Festival this weekend,&#8221; Rubin said. &#8220;It&#8217;s typically the same weekend as (Peach) every year, and this is the first year it&#8217;s not.&#8221;</p><p>Rubin made the trip to experience the sets of Warren Haynes and Gov&#8217;t Mule, String Cheese Incident, Dark Star Orchestra and Toots &amp; The Maytals.</p><p>Thursday night sets also included performances by The Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio, Dopapod, and prolific Grateful Dead tribute Dark Star Orchestra as well as local bluegrass jamsters Cabinet and Tom Hamilton/Disco Biscuits side project Electron featuring Shavertown guitarist Justin Mazer.</p><style>
