RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Deborah Ross is taking on Republican criticism of her former position with the American Civil Liberties Union, saying the organization defends individuals against government overreach. Ross met with Associated Press reporters Wednesday as she finds herself in a close campaign with two-term GOP incumbent Sen. Richard Burr. Burr's campaign and a sympathetic super PAC have criticized Ross in ads and press releases as too liberal to represent North Carolina. Ross was the state ACLU chapter's executive director before quitting in 2002 to serve in the state legislature for a decade. Ross says the nonprofit organization's role in a recent court victory over North Carolina's tough ballot access law as one way the ACLU fights for individual freedoms.
