EASTON, Pa. (AP) — The former mayor of an eastern Pennsylvania city has been accepted into a first-time offender program five months after he was charged with stealing $8,000 from a fire company social club. Carl Strye Jr. resigned from his job as mayor of Nazareth earlier this month as a condition of his acceptance into an accelerated rehabilitative disposition program. He's already paid back the $8,000 and agreed not to run for mayor in 2017. Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden approved Styre's entry into the program on Wednesday. It allows him to avoid a criminal conviction and have the felony theft charge cleared from his record, provided he completes the program. Strye was charged in April with stealing from the social club of Vigilance Hose Company while serving as president from 1987 to 2013.
