PITTSBURGH (AP) — Efforts to repair a busy Pittsburgh bridge damaged by a construction fire Sept. 2 have been delayed by false concerns it might collapse — and efforts to rehearse a key repair step. State transportation officials hoped crews could move a replacement beam into place Tuesday, but the Liberty Bridge was evacuated when an engineer thought the bridge had shifted. It turns out the movement was caused by the normal heating as temperatures increased. Crews will try again to replace the beam Wednesday, a pain-staking process that must first be rehearsed. The bridge must be jacked up two inches — in eighth-of-an-inch steps — to ensure safety. The fire began on plastic pipes and a construction tarp as crews were cutting steel as part of an $80 million reconstruction project. The fire damaged a crucial support beam.
