Judge sentences homeless man who torched Wilkes-Barre home

Dallas School District students scored better than other Luzerne County districts in state English Language Arts (ELA) and math tests and scored second highest in math, according to new results posted by the state Thursday.Looking at the percentage of students who scored proficient or advanced, Dallas Wycallis Elementary, Dallas Elementary and Dallas Middle School had the three best results in the county for ELA tests, with 84 percent, 82.1 percent and 79.1 percent, respectively.Crestwood&#8217;s Rice Elementary, Fairview Elementary and Fairview Middle School had the next three spots, with 78.4 percent, 77.6 percent and 76 percent.In math tests, Wycallis and Dallas Elementary had the top two spots with 84.5 percent and 72.7 percent, while Rice and Fairview had the next two spots at 71.7 percent and 68.6 percent.Wyoming Area topped Dallas and Crestwood in the science tests, with 95 percent scoring proficient or advanced at Dymond Elementary. Dallas Elementary was a close second with 94.8 percent and Rice elementary was third with 94.5 percent.On the other end of the scale, Wilkes-Barre Area and Hazleton Area schools had the lowest results among county schools.Three Wilkes-Barre Area elementary schools &#8212; Heights-Murray, Dodson, and Flood &#8212; as well as GAR Memorial and Meyers high schools, were at the bottom of the list for ELA scores. Heights-Murray had the lowest ELA results in the county with 22.1 percent proficient or advanced. Dodson had 22.2 percent, GAR 24.1 percent, Meyers 31.3 percent and Flood 32.9 percent.GAR and Meyers posted the lowest results in math, both in single digits: 4.9 percent for GAR and 82 for Meyers. Hanover Area Jr./Sr. High School had the third lowest with 11.1 percent.GAR and Meyers also hit bottom in science test, with 15.5 percent at GAR and 34.2 percent at Meyers. Hazleton Elementary/Middle School had the third lowest results with 37.2 percent.Those are the results of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests, which are given in grades three through eight. High schools without grade eight have no PSSA results, and instead are gauged solely on the grade 11 Keystone Exams in literature, biology and algebra I.In the Keystone Exams, Crestwood High School had the highest percentage of students in the county, scoring proficient or advanced in all three subjects: 87.7 percent in literature, 80.6 percent in biology, and 84.9 percent in algebra 1.Northwest Area came in second in literature and biology, with 85.8 percent and 76.2 percent respectively. Pittston Area High School was second in algebra I with 71.6 percent.Excluding career and technology centers, which typically do poorly in the academic subject tests and are often judged by results of tests that focus on the trades they stress, GAR has the lowest county scores in all three Keystone Exams: 45.9 percent in literature, 27.5 percent in biology and 31.2 percent in algebra 1.Here are the
