EDWARDSVILLE &#8212; After losing to FDU-Florham last year in heart-breaking fashion for the first time in 30 years, there&#8217;s no way Wilkes could suffer another dramatic setback to the Devils this time around.After all, the Colonels have never lost consecutive games to their MAC opponent in 32 meetings entering Saturday.But history was not on Wilkes&#8217; side.For the second straight season, the Colonels lost to FDU marking the first time in both teams&#8217; history that has happened. And, it occurred in crushing fashion yet again as the Devils scored the go-ahead touchdown of a 32-28 win at Schmidt Stadium with 3 seconds left in the game.The loss was also the second straight week that Wilkes fell by two points after falling last week to Widener.&#8220;You can&#8217;t lose on the final play (and) you can&#8217;t lose by two points to Widener,&#8221; said devastated head coach Trey Brown.Having fought back from a 19-point deficit to take their first lead in the third quarter, the Colonels (1-4 overall, 1-3 MAC) appeared to be headed for their second MAC win of the season.Leading 28-26 with 30 seconds left, Wilkes had the Devils in a fourth-and-10 on their own 43. That&#8217;s when Jagger Green completed a pass to Mike Panzarino for 21 yards and a first down.A 15-yard roughing the passer call on the play moved the Devils to the Wilkes 21. Now with less than 10 seconds left and no timeouts, Green rushed to the line and found Panzarino again for 21 yards and the touchdown putting FDU in front and giving the team just its fourth-ever win over Wilkes in 33 games.&#8220;Not many,&#8221; a monotone Brown said when asked about the positives the team could take into its bye week. &#8220;We&#8217;ve competed. What we did coming back, we&#8217;ve done that before. The first time you do that, it&#8217;s kind of a positive. The second time, maybe it&#8217;s still a positive. But when you show that you can do that and do it, I think it&#8217;s too repetitive. I don&#8217;t like doing that. I&#8217;d rather be on the other side.&#8221;That roughing the passer call hurt the Colonels, but in all, they committed 12 penalties for 121 yards. It also didn&#8217;t help that the Devils (1-3, 1-2) recovered an onside kick to start the game and scored on that possession, to take a quick 6-0 lead, and left one less time the Colonels would get the ball.FDU scored two more touchdowns in the first half and opened a 19-0 lead. The Colonels offense, which was stagnant on their first five drives with a turnover on downs and four punts, finally put together a good drive in the second quarter when they went 80 yards on just eight plays capped by a 24-yard pass from Ryan Dailey to Garrett Armstrong to pull within 19-7.Before halftime, Dailey found Jeff Steeber for 6 yards out ending another 80-yard drive to pull within 19-14 at the break.&#8220;You can&#8217;t come out flat. You can&#8217;t spot teams 19 points,&#8221; Brown said. &#8220;When you do that, you allow a football team to believe a little bit, and they believed. We struggled to get out of our own way initially and whenever you do that &#8230; I never felt we had our feet settled in the first half.&#8221;Wilkes took its only lead in the third quarter after an errant snap on a FDU punt landed in its own end zone and Kyle Gattuso jumped on it for the Colonels touchdown putting them in front 28-26 with 3:15 on the clock.The Colonels held the lead until less than a minute remained, but they couldn&#8217;t put the Devils away. They punted two more times and turned the ball over on downs on their last drive when they were on the FDU 10 and needed just one yard to solidify the win. Instead, a rush went for minus-2 yards.
