Pittston Area volleyball hits a turning point with win over Berwick

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; This magical season of field hockey resurgence for Meyers just won&#8217;t slow down.Selena Soto keeps making sure of it.Soto scored a hat trick in an 18-minute span of the second half Wednesday, Meghan Morris helped out with two assists and the Mohawks won their sixth straight game by busting loose in the second half for a 6-0 victory over Nanticoke at Kistler Park.&#8220;We&#8217;re doing really good,&#8221; Soto said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what happened this year.&#8221;Something sparked the Mohawks.A league afterthought during the past two seasons, Meyers improved to 6-1 and remained hot on the heels of 8-0 Holy Redeemer in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2. Redeemer won the season opener against Meyers, and the Mohawks haven&#8217;t lost since while awaiting the rematch next Friday at Hollenback Park.&#8220;I&#8217;m hoping we go in there on an eight-game winning streak and get the confidence up,&#8221; said Meyers coach Allison Banks, now in her fourth season. &#8220;And give them a game this time.&#8221;The Mohawks have played with everyone else.Madyson Davies scored the lone goal of the first half off an assist from Alexis Bruno, but it wasn&#8217;t long after halftime before Meyers had another victory pretty much sealed.Soto extended the Mohawks lead to 3-0 with two goals in the first five minutes of the second half, and Kendra Krolick pitched in with a goal and an assist over the final 23 minutes. And the Meyers defense held the Trojanettes without a single shot on goal.&#8220;Our coach gave us some motivational words there during halftime,&#8221; Soto said. &#8220;Then we remembered how to play field hockey.&#8221;The program has spent this season recalling the excitement of playing for the postseason &#8212; something that hasn&#8217;t happened since Meyers went 11-2-1 and finished second to Pittston Area in the WVC Division 2 in 2013. Since then, Meyers put up a combined 6-13-1 record, finishing third and fourth, respectively, in Division 4 the past two seasons.&#8220;I think we can make it,&#8221; Soto said. &#8220;Hopefully, this time we can get there.&#8221;The Mohawks, who are vying for the District 2 Class A tournament, haven&#8217;t won a division title since finishing 13-0-1 in 2009 to capture the WVC Division 3. It&#8217;s a thought that&#8217;s been on the team&#8217;s mind.&#8220;Definitely, the reorganization of the divisions helped,&#8221; Banks said, noting most of the WVC&#8217;s elite teams were grouped into Division 1 this season after the PIAA re-classified schools into three groupings of field hockey schools for its postseason tournaments. &#8220;But the girls, they try and they listen to us. That&#8217;s one thing we haven&#8217;t had in the past, girls that listen to us. And they work together.&#8221;The league is beginning to notice as the Mohawks keep hanging around near the top of the division standings.&#8220;We just picked it up,&#8221; Soto said. &#8220;Hopefully we can continue and make it to playoffs.&#8221;Holy Redeemer 5,Northwest 1Leah Mullery finished with a goal and an assist and Kat Finnegan and Talia Kosierowski both added two assists as the Royals remained unbeaten at 8-0 at the top of the WVC Division 2.McKenna Dolan got the scoring started with a goal 11:30 in. Kirsten Eddinger scored for the 5-4 Rangers with 8:45 remaining in the game.Lake-Lehman 5, Dallas 0Makayla Adams scored the game&#8217;s first goal, then added another later in the first half as the Black Knights took a four-goal lead into intermission and ran their WVC Division 1-leading record to 8-0-1.Izzy Radel assisted on the opening goal, which came midway through the first half, then scored one of her own to give Lehman a 2-0 lead.Lackawanna Trail 2,Hazleton Area 2Courtney Dwyer scored with 3:43 remaining as the Lions staved off a second straight loss and forged a tie.Arielle Slowikc&#8217;s goal with 10:43 to play lifted the Cougars into a 2-1 lead, after Lauren Baldwin scored in the first half for Trail and Jill Buchman answered for Hazleton Area.Sarah Weisenfluh finished with 12 saves for Lackawanna Trail.Crestwood 2,Pittston Area 0Sarah Richards and Jordan Olenginski scored first-half goals and the Comets held Pittston Area to just three shots as Crestwood got back on the winning track after suffering its first WVC loss in four years by controlling the Patriots.Crestwood improved to 5-1-1 after dropping a 1-0 game to Lake-Lehman in Monday&#8217;s battle for the top spot in the WVC Division 1. The Comets last lost a league game to Holy Redeemer on Sept. 19, 2012, then went 46 consecutive league games without a defeat before Monday.Wyoming Valley West 3,Wyoming Area 1Natalie Zasada scored two goals as the Spartans kept their WVC Division 1 title hopes alive by coming back against Wyoming Area.Lauren Parente gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead just over five minutes in, but Zasada tied it with a goal 40 seconds from halftime.
