NANTICOKE &#8212; Frustration was all over the faces of the Holy Redeemer team as the first half hour ticked away without any results.A seemingly inevitable path towards a tie for the Wyoming Valley Conference crown was coming unhinged.Coming off of its first loss of the season, the Royals found solace in the form of set pieces in a 2-0 victory over third-place Nanticoke Monday in WVC Division 2 girls soccer.Freshman Annie Bagnall scored both of the Royals&#8217; goals in a game that was not played in their top form. Nanticoke maintained the majority of possession in the first half, and the teams played equally in the latter 40 minutes.&#8220;She is playing really well for us,&#8221; Holy Redeemer coach Robert Hughes said. &#8220;We have good senior leadership on this team to help her get in the right direction. It&#8217;s been a really good year for us.&#8221;Holy Redeemer kept itself in step with Lake-Lehman at the top of the standings with 30 points. The Black Knights beat the Royals 3-1 on Oct. 4.Set pieces were the Royals&#8217; saving grace in a game that saw both teams struggle to make the best of their runs. In the 33rd minute, Bagnall redirected a Nicole Cavanaugh free kick from 20 yards away at the far post for the Royals&#8217; first goal.In the 39th, Bagnall headed a neatly placed Autumn Kaminski corner kick into the net. Kaminski&#8217;s ball lofted into the left side of the box where Bagnall gave the keeper no chance to stop a ball charging for the net.&#8220;We took some ill-advised shots,&#8221; Hughes said. &#8220;We were not giving ourselves a very good chance defending. We were taking shots from bad angles. But the two set pieces, we did score on were great finishes.&#8220;We know we have stuff we need to work on going into the playoffs. We&#8217;re hoping to be peaking by that time. The girls worked hard. It was a physical game.&#8221;Julia Adams dominated from the center back position. One of Nanticoke&#8217;s best chances came in the 63rd minute and was stopped in its tracks by Adams. The Trojans&#8217; Katie Butczynski sent a through-ball through a host of defenders to set a breakaway chance down the right side. Adams made a heads-up move and thwarted the attack from 10-yards out.&#8220;I think Julia&#8217;s probably the best sweeper in the league,&#8221; Hughes said. &#8220;The defense is really solid this year. They played a great game. Our starting keeper is out injured, and we really didn&#8217;t give Nanticoke a lot of looks at the goal.&#8221;The Nanticoke goalkeeper Jess Skladzien made five saves. In the 75th minute, she stopped a point-blank shot off of a corner kick to keep it at a two-goal deficit.Crestwood 4, Pittston Area 1Melissa Herrera scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Crestwood past Pittston Area. Pittston goalkeeper Taryn Ashby registered a game-high 10 saves.Lake-Lehman 4, Meyers 0Mackenzie Love had a big day for Lake-Lehman, registering a pair of goals in a win over Meyers.Meyers goalkeeper Devon Keiper made 19 saves.Berwick 8, GAR 0Lydia Traugh scored two goals and assisted on three others in Berwick&#8217;s rout of GAR.Cassidy Exkert had a goal and two assists, while Amber Koshinski chipped in with two assists.Berwick improves to 9-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference.Wyoming Seminary 1, Hanover Area 1 OTKatarina Banks scored on a pass from Claudia Corchado to score Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s lone goal as Gillian Barber found the back of the net to put Hanover Area on the board.
