KINGSTON &#8212; Flying down the field with the game on her stick, Hannah Maxwell felt right at home.And her winning drive only reminded Wyoming Valley West what it lost when she walked out the door.Maxwell buried the deciding goal with just over 14 minutes remaining Monday, lifting her new Wyoming Seminary team over her old one as the Blue Knights downed Valley West, 2-1, in a a renewed Wyoming Valley Conference rivalry between two teams battling to stay in the Division 1 title race.&#8220;It felt pretty awesome, because they were all my teammates,&#8221; Maxwell, a Sem freshman who lives just a few blocks from Valley West&#8217;s Spartan Stadium in Kingston, said of the Spartans. &#8220;Just coming out with a win was pretty awesome.&#8221;In the end, the academics of Sem &#8212; a private prep school that also prepares postgraduates for college &#8212; won her over.Maxwell said had no problems with Valley West growing up through grade school and playing field hockey in that district, and still holds dear the many friendships she made while attending classes and playing field hockey with the Spartans.&#8220;The Valley West program is awesome,&#8221; Maxwell said. &#8220;My parents felt the Sem academics are pretty awesome, so they sent me here.&#8221;The Blue Knights welcomed her with open arms.&#8220;The girls are so nice to me,&#8221; Maxwell said. &#8220;I love it.&#8221;It&#8217;s easy to see why Sem loves her.One of the top four-point producers in the WVC, Maxwell made a long drive down the field and deposited her Division 1-leading 14th goal into the cage to break a 1-1 tie with 14:03 to play.That kept Sem in the hunt for a Division 1 championship, as the Blue Knights improved to 10-1 and stayed right behind 9-0-1 Lake-Lehman for first place in the standings.Meanwhile Valley West fell to 7-2-2 and saw its division championship chances severely diminished out of the division title race with three games remaining in the regular season.&#8220;I was thinking, &#8216;She scored, so I&#8217;m not going to yell at her,&#8217; &#8221; Wyoming Seminary coach Karen Klassner said. &#8220;But we thought she should have passed the ball.&#8221;It turns out Maxwell just couldn&#8217;t pass up a chance to make things right.Earlier in the second half, she made another long rush, but was prevented from getting off a shot by Valley West&#8217;s stingy defenders.&#8220;The first time, I was stopped,&#8221; Maxwell said. &#8220;The second time, I knew I had to go through everyone to score.&#8221;Wyoming Seminary scored first, as Alex Wesneski rattled the cage off a feed from Alicia Carr little more than 11 minutes into a game that brought the two long-time rivals back together in a regular-season game with the realigned Division 1, after Sem spent the past couple of years playing in Division 4.Natalie Woods answered with a goal off an assist from Foto Tsioles just 67 seconds before halftime, tying the game and setting up Maxwell&#8217;s winner.Both teams are almost certain to make the District 2 playoffs, which open in two weeks, with Sem also in the hunt for one of the top two spots in the eight-team Class A district and the Spartans remaining in strong shape to take one of the top two seedings and a first-round bye in the six-team Class 2A districts.&#8220;We have to keep winning if we want to get where we want to be,&#8221; Maxwell said. &#8220;So that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re doing.&#8221;Coughlin 3, Wallenpaupack 0Katie Anderson fed Hannah Rushkowski for two goals and Jolene Ulichney scored the other as the Crusaders clinched a spot in the six-team District 2 Class 2A playoffs in two weeks.The Crusaders improved to 6-3 and currently stand in third place in the playoff seedings, behind Crestwood and Wyoming Valley West. Coughlin&#8217;s defense limited the Buckhorns to one shot in the shutout.Northwest 3, Nanticoke Area 0Northwest&#8217;s Sydney Fanchella stole the show, scoring two goals, in a shutout against Nanticoke Area. Trojans goalie Jill Maute made a game-high seven saves.Meyers 6, Berwick 0Selena Soto and Kendra Krolick put on a clinic for Meyers in a shutout win over Berwick.Soto contributed with a hat trick and an assist while Krolick added a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Halle Zulkoski scored a goal and added an assist as well.Crestwood 11, Tunkhannock 0Crestwood&#8217;s offense erupted when Sarah Richards and Chloe Greene each scored three times for the Comets, while Richards also added an assist and Greene had a pair of helpers. Madi Granoski got in on the action for Crestwood, scoring a pair of goals and adding and assist.Tunkhannock goalie Tamara St. Clair made a game-high 16 saves.Wyoming Area 8, Abington Heights 0Emily Wanko had the perfect touch in Wyoming Area&#8217;s win over Abington Heights, assisting on five goals.
