Letter to the Editor: Summer camp organizers with Jewish Community Alliance look to the future

<p>WVIA-TV has scheduled three televised congressional debates: Nov. 1 for the 10th District, Nov. 2 for the 17th District, and Nov. 3 for the 11th District.</p><p>Incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Marino, of the 10th District, was the last to accept an invitation to debate. Democrat Michael Molesevich will come prepared with facts and policy proposals. Marino has never seen much need for informed and thoughtful policy. Instead of being wise, he is &#8220;tough,&#8221; his 2014 campaign motto. Like the Republican presidential nominee, he trumpets fact-free statements and positions.</p><p>In the 11th District, Republican Rep. Lou Barletta shares Marino&#8217;s (and Trump&#8217;s) penchant for exploiting anger, fear and hatred. Both fit the term coined by New Republic magazine &#8211; &#8220;backbench extremists.&#8221; Even the better Republicans in Congress have become deficient in formulating policy. They loudly and frequently denounce the Affordable Care Act, but they never have offered an alternative to what is known as &#8220;Obamacare.&#8221;</p><p>One congressman from the area shouldn&#8217;t be replaced: the highly respected Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright, in the 17th District. In four years, he has accomplished much by reaching across the aisle, something Marino and Barletta seemingly never do. Cartwright recently was elevated to the prestigious House Appropriations Committee, as testimony to his effectiveness.</p><p>As to the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Republican Pat Toomey has run an incredibly misleading and deceitful campaign. He has projected onto Democrat Kate McGinty all the sins of which he is most guilty. It is unconscionable that he would accuse her of corporate ties when he earned millions on Wall Street and then would build a political career founded on donations of big banks.</p><p>He wants above all to win an election that is built on a strategy and tactics of the big dodge, in which he has never been upfront enough to go to the cross on an important issue.
