<p>Stephanie Newmark was named head coach of the Wilkes&#8217; women&#8217;s ice hockey program.</p><p>Newmark, a native of Australia, begins her duties on Oct. 14.</p><p>&#8220;It is very exciting being the first head coach at Wilkes University and an amazing opportunity to bring in my knowledge to create a successful program,&#8221; Newmark said. &#8220;I am thrilled to be a part of this exciting opportunity as women&#8217;s ice hockey has been one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and Canada over the last decade, and the decision to establish this program will most definitely have a positive effect on the university.</p><p>&#8220;In accepting the job, I was most impressed by the academic strengths of Wilkes, as well as its commitment to the new hockey program. Starting a program from scratch takes a lot of hard work, but I believe that all the elements are in place for this to become a highly successful NCAA program,&#8221; she said.</p><p>On Aug. 29, Wilkes University President Dr. Patrick Leahy announced the addition of both men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s ice hockey programs with each sport to open competition in 2017-18. The hiring of Newmark will allow her to have a full year of recruiting in order for Wilkes to prepare for its first season of competition.</p><p>Newmark comes to Wilkes after spending the last two years as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire.</p><p>Newmark helped build the Eagles program from scratch, with the program starting play during the 2015-16 season. Her main duties included coaching the defense in-game, assisting with on-ice practices and mentoring during other team organizational activities. Recruiting was also a major part of her role as assistant coach especially with the startup of the program.</p><p>Newmark played her collegiate hockey at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire. A four-year letter-winner, she helped the Panthers to back-to-back ECAC postseason berths as a junior and senior. Playing on the blue line (defense), Newmark appeared in 92 games tallying two goals and eight assists during her career with the Panthers.</p><p>&#8220;Stephanie&#8217;s high level playing and coaching experience will no doubt prove a great asset to our women&#8217;s ice hockey program,&#8221; Dr. Paul Adams, Vice President of Student Affairs, said. &#8220;We are excited to expose our student-athletes to Stephanie&#8217;s vast international experience and perspective.&#8221;</p><style>
