WVC Football: Adrian Otero leads Hazleton Area past Dallas

<p>HANOVER TWP. &#8212; Put the head down, plow through the scrum, get the first down in the mud and driving rain.</p><p>That&#8217;s all GAR quarterback Austin Yelland wanted to do on the fourth-and-1 play Friday night. He got more than that and so did his Grenadier teammates.</p><p>Yelland scored on a 33-yard run on a quarterback sneak in the third quarter and GAR used it as a springboard to a 28-14 victory over Hanover Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3A-A game with District 2 Class 3A playoff implications.</p><p>GAR (4-5) kept alive in the hunt for four D2-3A playoff spots. The Grenadiers maintained sixth place, 40 state points behind fourth-place Meyers (5-4). The teams play on Thursday. Hanover Area (4-5) dropped from fourth to fifth place in the district standings.</p><p>&#8220;Our kids, they dug deep,&#8221; GAR coach Paul Wiedlich Jr. said. &#8220;They&#8217;re on a mission. They know we&#8217;re on a two-game season. We&#8217;re going to see what happens for next week. But a lot of credit goes to our senior class. They don&#8217;t want the season to end next weekend.&#8221;</p><p>GAR trailed 7-6 at halftime, but opened the third quarter with the ball. The success of the drive came down to Yelland&#8217;s sneak on the fourth-and-1 from the Hanover Area 33. He squeezed through a crack and kept going, giving the Grenadiers the lead for good.</p><p>&#8220;I was just totally shocked I didn&#8217;t get touched on that,&#8221; Yelland said. &#8220;It just happened. It definitely changed the momentum and put the momentum back on our side.&#8221;</p><p>Whether the momentum did shift to Hanover Area, it seemed to shift back quickly. Yelland&#8217;s run was one of a few situations where it occurred.</p><p>Another was in the first quarter when Hanover Area lineman Matthew Sebolka blocked a punt. Instead of the Hawkeyes having the ball deep in GAR territory, the play was negated by a Hanover Area holding penalty. And after a conference of the officials, GAR was given the ball.</p><p>Later in the half, Hanover Area had to punt on a fourth-and-goal play. Hanover had a first-and-goal at the GAR 10-yard line and quarterback Brandon Chafin ran to the 1. A holding penalty wiped out the run, but that was just part of the problem. Chafin appeared to injury either his hand or wrist and returned only briefly before missing the second half.</p><p>An incompletion and a couple negative-yardage plays resulted in a fourth-and-goal from the 39. The Hawkeyes had no other option than to punt.</p><p>&#8220;The call on the block punt changed the momentum,&#8221; Hanover Area coach Mike McCree said. &#8220;Our defense played great tonight. We had four turnovers, but we struggled offensively.&#8221;</p><p>Hanover Area also lost Sean Coleman, who was scheduled to start at running back, on the opening kickoff when he was knocked woozy.</p><p>After Yelland&#8217;s 33-yard scoring run, GAR turned a fumble recovery by David Vergo into a 1-yard TD run by fullback Mike Drozda two plays later.
