A bittersweet Sunday as Coopers serves last meals as full-service eatery

HERSHEY &#8212; Standing at center ice for a penalty shot with the game on the line, Dominik Simon didn&#8217;t know what he was going to do.At least, not until he skated in on Hershey Bears netminder Vitek Vanecek. When Simon approached the crease, he knew exactly what he was going to do.&#8220;At the end I was like &#8216;OK, backhand,&#8217; and it worked out,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You have the opportunity to make the difference so I was lucky it went through.&#8221;Simon&#8217;s penalty shot goal in overtime on Sunday gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 2-1 win over the Bears, wrapping up their first three-in-three weekend with two wins and four points.Head coach Clark Donatelli called it a &#8220;gut check&#8221; win for the Penguins, who trailed Hershey 1-0 halfway through the third period. Tristan Jarry stopped 30 of 31 shots to keep the Penguins in it against a Hershey attack that was overpowering at times.But the Penguins had plenty of chances during regulation to put the Bears in the hole, particularly in the second period when Hershey was whistled for four consecutive penalties. Despite having a two-man advantage for 52 seconds during Hershey&#8217;s penalty parade, the Penguins blanked on all four power plays in the period to keep the Bears in the game.Over the last three games the Penguins power play is a dismal 0 for 16.&#8220;We are taking some positives from it,&#8221; said Tom Kostopoulos, who had a goal waved off earlier in the game after it was ruled he pushed the puck in with his body motion. &#8220;But we&#8217;ve got to bear down a little bit and get a couple ugly goals and go from there.&#8221;On a weekend where the Penguins scored two even strength goals, two while shorthanded and one on a penalty shot in overtime, they&#8217;re happy to see the puck in the back of the net no matter what the situation.&#8220;It feels good when you score some goals,&#8221; said Simon, who has goals in back-to-back games. &#8220;When the goals come it makes you feel better and more comfortable.&#8221;In between all of the penalties in the second period, Hershey did manage to beat Jarry when Riley Barber was left alone in the slot and fired a quick shot underneath for a 1-0 lead.While Hershey seemed to be in control through the third period, the Penguins got a break at the midway point when Chad Ruhwedel&#8217;s point shot deflected through traffic and was tipped by Jake Guentzel to even things up, 1-1.At the other end, Jarry continued his strong play to keep the Penguins in it. With Hershey establishing the play in the Penguins end, Jarry stuffed Christian Thomas&#8217; shot in front and then stopped Thomas again on a turnaround shot in the low slot.&#8220;He made some really big saves down the stretch,&#8221; Donatelli said. &#8220;He&#8217;s doing his job and he&#8217;s consistent. The guys have a lot of confidence in him.&#8221;And they had a lot of confidence in Simon when he was awarded the penalty shot in overtime. The call came after Simon was slashed on a breakaway seconds earlier.&#8220;I had a pretty long shift before so I was tired. But it feels great. I like to go for penalty shots,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Just you and the goalie. It&#8217;s a nice opportunity.&#8221;The Penguins are now 3-1 on the season and will carry a two-game winning streak into Wednesday&#8217;s matchup against Albany at home.But before they think about the Devils, the Penguins will cherish Sunday&#8217;s dramatic win against rival Hershey in the Giant Center.&#8220;We&#8217;re down going into the third period. It&#8217;s a gritty game and for some of our guys it&#8217;s their first three-in-three,&#8221; Donatelli said. &#8220;This is a tough building to win in. When you come back in this building, that&#8217;s a gut check for sure.&#8221;<style>
