<p>During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, it is an appropriate time to celebrate that when President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, our nation took one of the most important steps forward for the health of women and families in a generation.</p><p>A recent study released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services&#8217; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation confirms the Affordable Care Act promotes better health for women through the law&#8217;s core tenets of access, affordability and quality.</p><p>The law&#8217;s provisions have expanded coverage for 9.5 million more women through the health insurance marketplaces and Medicaid expansions. From 2010 to 2015, the uninsured rate among adult women dropped by nearly half.</p><p>The ACA has made coverage more affordable for women through premium tax credits and by eliminating gender differences in premiums in the individual and small-group insurance markets. And more than 6 million women with prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D have saved $11 billion since the law passed. Fewer young women say they have to put off health care because of the cost.</p><p>Quality of coverage for women has improved by eliminating lifetime and annual dollar limits on essential health benefits, and requiring coverage of recommended preventive services &#8211; and maternity care. More than 55 million women now have access to preventive services such as mammograms and contraception without any cost-sharing, such as co-pays or deductibles.</p><p>For the millions of women who have coverage thanks to the ACA, better health care already is within reach.</p><p><strong>Joanne Grossi</strong></p><p>Director, Region 3</p><p>U.S. Department of Health and Human Services</p><p>Philadelphia</p><style>
