Kluber, Indians shut down Cubs in Game 1 of World Series

<p>Generally, ambulatory surgery centers in the region get much higher net margins &#8212; income exceeding costs &#8212; than the statewide average, and some local centers top even the high regional average, according to a new report</p><p>The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council released its annual financial analysis of ambulatory surgery centers Wednesday, showing that, statewide, such centers had an average total margin of 25.4 percent.</p><p>Yet of nine regions defined by PHC4, region six &#8212; nine northeast counties, including Luzerne, Lackawanna and Wyoming &#8212; had the highest margin at 40.9 percent.</p><p>And seven of the 21 ambulatory surgery centers in region six had margins higher than that, including four in Luzerne County: The Center for Same Day Surgery at 86.5 percent (highest in the region), Kingston Ophthalmology at 46.1 percent, Gateway Surgical Center at 45.2 percent, and Hazleton Ambulatory Surgical Center at 43.9 percent.</p><p>Two Scranton facilities were also well above the regional average: Regional Hospital Surgical Center at 85.9 percent and Scranton Endoscopy at 64.9 percent.</p><p>At 30.6 percent, the margin at Same Day Geisinger South is below the regional level but still about 5 points above the state average.</p><p>Region 6 also gets a slightly larger share of net patient revenue &#8212; money from patient care only &#8212; from Medicare than the state average.</p><p>Statewide, ambulatory surgery centers got 24.4 percent of net patient revenue from Medicare; for region six, the average was 25.1 percent. Northeast Eye Institute Ambulatory Surgery had the highest rate of Medicare net patient revenue in the region, at 68 percent.</p><p>The report notes that, statewide, ambulatory surgical centers handled 27.9 percent of outpatient procedures reviewed in 2015 &#8212; procedures including endoscopy, laser surgery, opthamology and spine care &#8212; with the rest done by acute care hospital outpatient departments. That&#8217;s down from 31.5 percent in 2011.</p><style>
