Courtney Dwyer’s two goals lead Lackawanna Trail to district field hockey title

CHAPMAN LAKE &#8212; Dallas is headed back to Hershey to try to defend its state Class 2A boys cross country championship.This time, the Mountaineers are taking a different Wyoming Valley Conference rival with them.Holy Redeemer avenged two WVC losses to Berwick to knock out last year&#8217;s state seventh-place finisher and earn District 2&#8217;s second berth in the state meet.&#8220;I knew it was possible, but Berwick has a fantastic team,&#8221; Holy Redeemer coach Paul Hoda said. &#8220;I knew if we ran well, we could be close.&#8221;Dallas repeated its district championship by posting a team score of 50 while Holy Redeemer edged Berwick, 69-72, for the right to run in the PIAA Championships Nov. 5 on the Parkview Cross Country Course.Lackawanna League teams won the other two team titles and state berths that went with them along with sweeping all three individual boys titles.Hoda said there were signs right from the start of the season that the Royals were capable of winding up in Hershey. They finished third in the opening Cliff Robbins Invitational behind only eventual unbeaten league champions and district titlists Dallas and Montrose. Although Berwick beat Holy Redeemer in both their WVC meet and the conference championship, the Royals finished ahead of the Bulldogs in the PIAA Foundation Meet, which is seen as preparation for the state championships.&#8220;The seven that ran for us today are so close from top to bottom,&#8221; Hoda said. &#8220;Every mile they run, they run together.&#8221;Holy Redeemer was the strongest combination of first three runners among any team in the race. Aaron Hoda, the coach&#8217;s son, was fourth, Bryce Zapusek seventh and Lucas Volpetti ninth.Berwick had the lowest score through four runners.Dallas, however, was the best in the five-runner team score and Holy Redeemer was next-best in terms of depth to grab the other state berth.WVC champion Jack Zardecki led Dallas, finishing second and Mitchell Rome was sixth.&#8220;Our first guy was sick,&#8221; Dallas coach Matt Samuel said. &#8220;(Zardecki) woke up two days ago with a cold, but he still ran his best race.&#8220;Mitchell Rome is never disappointing. He had a great day.&#8221;The rest of the Mountaineers finished together.Adam Borton, Jason Culp, Steven Postupak and Josh Jarden placed 13th through 16th and Josh Wyandt was 19th.&#8220;Our top seven were all very close today,&#8221; Samuel said. &#8220;I can&#8217;t ask for anything more. Obviously, I always want a little bit better, but we&#8217;re improving.&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t always look that way, but we took a step up since our conference meet.&#8221;A year ago, the Mountaineers were running their best when they arrived in Hershey, something that will probably be needed for the team to have a chance to repeat.&#8220;We&#8217;re setting ourselves up, but it&#8217;s going to be tough,&#8221; Samuel said.Zardecki&#8217;s second-place finish led all WVC runners. Hazleton Area&#8217;s Franklin Cunningham was fourth in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional. Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s Eamon Gibbons led the conference in Class A as the 16th-place finisher.Cunningham was among the runners who qualified to compete in Hershey as individuals.Berwick managed to grab four of the six spots in Hershey that were claimed by WVC individuals. Lackawanna League runners took 13 berths and Williamsport, the lone District 4 team in the Class 3A race, claimed one.Ty Fisher was fifth and Jerod Waller, Mason Kimbell and Mitchell Martin joined him in the top 11 in Class 2A. Fisher, Kimbell and Martin all ran in Hershey last year as part of the Berwick team.Tunkhannock&#8217;s Ben Tidball claimed the last available berth in Class 2A. He finished 20th, but more importantly was the 10th individual other than runners from the two team qualifiers.Hazleton Area finished second to Abington Heights in Class 3A.Wyoming Seminary was the top WVC team in Class A, placing seventh out of 13 teams.Hazleton Area&#8217;s Bobby Earley was eighth to also receive one of the medals, which were awarded to the top 20 in Class 2A, 15 in Class A and 10 in Class 3A.DISTRICT 2 CROSS COUNTRYCHAMPIONSHIPSCLASS 3A BOYS (District 2-4)Team Scoring1, Abington Heights 36; 2.
