Wyoming Valley West rolls past Coughlin

BERWICK &#8212; It&#8217;s like Frank Sheptock was scheming against a college team all over again.The Berwick coach looked across the field, and saw all of Williamsport&#8217;s weapons. Choosing one spot is kind of like picking your poison.And all those weapons were on display &#8211; especially in the third quarter.Williamsport exploded out of the locker room, scoring 28 points in the quarter en route to a 56-23 victory over the Bulldogs Friday night at Crispin Field.The victory locks up the No. 1 seed for the Millionaires in the District 2 Class 6A playoffs, and they&#8217;ll face Hazleton Area in a first-round game next Friday. Meanwhile Berwick will a quarterfinal game against West Scranton at Crispin next week in the Class 4A bracket.&#8220;They are a very hot football team right now, and their athletes made some dynamic plays,&#8221; Sheptock said. &#8220;They were breaking tackles, and cutting back to find the openings. They are a very athletic team that played well today. It&#8217;s a challenging task. In the first half, I thought we had them on the ropes a little bit, but they erase mistakes so quickly with just one cut.&#8221;Really, you can&#8217;t just focus on one area.Slow down sophomore tailback Treyson Potts, and you get burned by Isaiah Hankins and Elliott Walker.Key on Hankins at quarterback, and Potts has a field day.Berwick managed to hang around in the first half after two explosive Williamsport plays &#8211; a 43-yard run by Potts and an easy 59-yard pass from Hankins to Dante Wright &#8211; in addition to Potts&#8217; second score gave the Millionaires a 21-0 lead.The Bulldogs bounced back. Jared Marshman hit Matt Champ in stride on a 65-yard sideline go route and Berwick was back in business, down 21-7 with five minutes left in the quarter. And a 19-yard field goal by Ken Marshman sent the Bulldogs into the locker room down by just 11, 21-10.&#8220;We have a great group of kids,&#8221; Williamsport head coach Chuck Crews said. &#8220;The heads were down at halftime. I told them we were up 21-10, and it was time to get going. And we came out in the second half, and my gosh, the No. 1 offense came out of the locker room with us. Listen, we had a great crowd here, and the Marching Millionaires were here with us. It sounded like we were in Williamsport, baby.&#8221;And the No. 1 offense in the conference did indeed arrive.Williamsport recorded an amazing 11 first downs in the third quarter, and it started when Walker returned the kickoff back to the Berwick 35 to start the third. A short, four-play drive was capped off by a two-yard slant from Hankins to Walker.The Millionaires had four drives in the 12-minute period &#8211; and scored touchdowns on all of them.A dazzling 17-yard run by Potts after he spun out of two tackles.A 32-yard pass to Walker as Hankins found the receiver wide open in the middle of the field.And Jalen Jackson&#8217;s 12-yard fade to the end zone gave Williamsport a 49-10 lead with six seconds left in the quarter, and put the game into the mercy rule.&#8220;Winning is always fun, and it&#8217;s a great feeling,&#8221; Crews said. &#8220;We have earned that No. 1 seed, and earned ourselves a league championships. We are taking steps to restore Millionaire football where it should be.&#8221;Williamsport, which averaged 500 yards of offense coming in, finished with 551 yards. Potts had three scores and 179 yards, while Hankins threw for four touchdowns and 205 yards on 13 of 17 passing.Berwick&#8217;s Jared Marshman had 159 yards passing &#8211; 104 of those going in the direction of Matt Champ.&#8220;We will go back to work.
