HAZLETON &#8212; On the very same night Hazleton&#8217;s favorite native son Joe Madden was managing the Chicago Cubs in their first World Series game at Wrigley Stadium in 71 years, the Cougars wrapped up their 2016 campaign with a dominant 38-3 victory over Crestwood.With the win, Mike Brennan&#8217;s Cougars wrapped up their season on a three-game win streak, after dropping their first seven contests of the year.Junior tailback Adrian Otero, sophomore wideout David Smith and quarterback Sparky Wolk (10 for 13, 134 yards, 2 TDs) led the offensive attack.After both squads traded field goals on their first drives of the ball game, Otero returned the Comets kickoff to the 43-yard line. From there, Otero cruised to a 40-yard sprint that took the Cougars to the 3-yard line and set up senior running back Carson Kinney&#8217;s 3-yard touchdown run to give his squad a 10-3 advantage late in the first quarter.Otero ran for a game-high 128-yards on just 16 carries and scored on a 1-yard bruising goal-line touchdown late in the second quarter. Right before the half, in his only reception on the night, Otero caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Wolk to give the Cougars an insurmountable 31-3 lead going into the locker room.Smith finished with seven passes for 110 yards. His key highlight catches were a 40-yard catch deep into Crestwood territory and then an 11-yard touchdown reception less than five minutes into the second quarter to give his team a 17-3 lead.Defensively, Smith picked off Comets&#8217; Kyle Richards deep pass and returned it for a 63-yard touchdown return just 30 seconds after his scoring reception to expand the lead to three touchdowns.Crestwood&#8217;s offense only had two bright spots on the night and both came from seniors playing in their last high school football games for the Comets. Kicker Alex DeSpirito connected on a 24-yard field goal to tie the game up at three apiece late in the first quarter.
