KINGSTON &#8212; Wyoming Seminary held on right down to the last play of the game to grind out a 7-0 win over Canterbury School on Saturday.A pair of late fumble recoveries helped the Blue Knights outlast the 5-3 Saints from Connecticut in a classic defensive battle.&#8220;Both teams were trying to run the football today and we got the two key turnovers (fumble recoveries),&#8221; first-year Sem coach Kevin Kelly said. &#8220;I&#8217;m proud of the way these kids finished this year. I told them let&#8217;s finish on a winning note and that&#8217;s what we did.&#8221;Ironically on senior day, it was a freshman who rose to the occasion and sealed the win by recovering those two fumbles within a span over two minutes.&#8220;We&#8217;ve had a lot of close games this year, but we had to learn how to finish as we did last week (15-8 over Perkiomen) and this week,&#8221; Kelly said. &#8220;It came down to the last play of the game.&#8221;Freshman Kyle Costello, a Wilkes-Barre native, dismantled Canterbury&#8217;s 8-play, 33-yard drive when he pounced on the pigskin the first time at the 3:03 mark.&#8220;I just saw the ball sitting there on the ground and went hard to get it and put our team back on offense to help us win the game,&#8221; Costello said. &#8220;Our team just played their hearts out, and after working hard all year, it&#8217;s just great to get a win like this.&#8221;After a three and out, senior punter Duncan Breig launched an impeccably-placed 36-yard punt &#8211; pinning Canterbury at their own 1-yard line with 1:21 left to play.Breig&#8217;s five punts averaged over 40 yards.&#8220;This was our first home win, so that was great to go out after playing four years on top,&#8221; Breig said. &#8220;It&#8217;s been a great experience playing football here.&#8221;&#8220;Duncan had two big key punts and flipped the field for us,&#8221; Kelly said. &#8220;These types of seniors are the backbone of our football team.&#8221;Following an injury timeout midway through the second quarter, Sem lost a fumble as quarterback Jared Piatnik was stripped as he tried to pitch the ball. Both teams responded with a three and out on their next series.Piatnik finished with 76 yards and one TD, a 15-yard strike to Daeshaun Jupiter-Deane with 50 seconds left before the half.
