FOREST CITY &#8211; Devin Lindley admitted the nerves might have gotten the best of Lake-Lehman from the very start.And her point was validated by the 13 first-set attack errors in the quarterfinals of the District 2 Class 2A tournament against MeyersBut those nerves subsided just in time for Lehman to advance into the next round.Lindley opened the fifth set with five consecutive points behind the service line, and Hailey Kubishi had four of her team-high 12 kills in the race to 15 as Lehman eliminated Meyers, 3-2, Monday night.In the nightcap, Hanover Area won the opening set &#8211; only to see No. 3 seed Forest City rally for a 3-1 victory to end the Hawkeyes&#8217; season.Both Lehman and Forest City advance into Tuesday&#8217;s semifinal round at Holy Redeemer. Lehman faces off with the state-ranked Royals in one semifinal, 30 minutes after the Foresters and No. 2 seed Dunmore finish their 5 p.m. match.&#8220;For us, we just have to shake things off, and we can&#8217;t carry any bad games into the next game,&#8221; Kubishi said. &#8220;We had to come together in that fifth set. That was our season right there. At times this season, we&#8217;ve struggled to shake off bad sets and come together. That early lead definitely helps to calm the nerves, but you still have to work hard to keep that lead.&#8221;Yes, it was evident it took the Black Knights some time to kick off the rust.First, the team&#8217;s bus took a wrong turn to Forest City as the match started 20 minutes late. And the first set didn&#8217;t go the best for Taryn Tomassacci&#8217;s squad as Meyers took advantage of all those attack mistakes en route to a 25-13 win.&#8220;I was proud of how the team really worked hard to push through after that first set,&#8221; Tomassacci said. &#8220;I called some people out and they stepped up to the plate. You can tell there was nervous energy coming off the bus because it has been a few years since we&#8217;ve been in the postseason. It was just about coming together as a team.&#8221;The Black Knights quickly regrouped.Clinging to a 19-18 lead in the second set, Lehman scored the final six points on Courtney Henninger&#8217;s serve &#8211; as Lindley had three kills in the run.Again, it was another long run to close the third set. This time, the Black Knights found themselves in a 22-19 hole, but two aces by Lindley and three Mohawks&#8217; attack errors led to a 6-0 spurt and a 24-22 Lehman lead. Two points later, a one-over by setter Ashley Herceg ended the set and put the team up 2-1 in the match.&#8220;Really, we just had to shake it off, and just worry about the next game,&#8221; Lindley said. &#8220;You can&#8217;t worry about the last one. You just have to fix the mistakes and move forward.&#8221;Credit Meyers (7-10) for fighting back. The Mohawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth, and used a combined nine kills from Da&#8217;Nayia Ballard and Chloe Delp to build a 20-12 edge and tie the match at 2-2.But the 5-0 deficit to start the fifth was too much for the Mohawks to overcome. Meyers got it back to 6-4 before Lehman (7-10) put it away with a 7-1 run and a 13-5 lead.Forest City 3, Hanover Area 1Bill Kane couldn&#8217;t have asked for a better start.Hanover Area was clicking on all cylinders, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set and cruising to a 25-16 victory.And it looked like the Hawkeyes were primed for the upset, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage into the second set.That&#8217;s when Katelyn Dovin woke her Forest City team up.The junior ripped off eight straight points behind the service line, and from that point forward, it seemed like Hanover (6-12) just never recovered.Set scores were 16-25, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-11.&#8220;I&#8217;m disappointed. They just came awake and started to play their game,&#8221; said Kane, the Hanover Area head coach. &#8220;They really out-hustled us in the final two sets. Our passing kind of broke down, and it threw us out of rhythm. It was a tough loss.&#8221;The Hawkeyes had a great chance to get back into the match.Down 2-1, the team held a three-point edge (22-19) in the fourth set and were a mere three points from forcing the final stanza.That&#8217;s when Forest City had its biggest answer, closing the set on a 7-2 run as two Hanover Area attack errors and Amelia Zazzera&#8217;s cross-court kill locked up a 26-24 win.&#8220;We had a great chance, but we had four mistakes right in a row to kind of let them back into it,&#8221; Kane said. &#8220;You can&#8217;t do that when you get into playoffs.&#8221;Katilin Braford finished with 10 kills to pace Hanover Area, while Kaylee Cromer added seven kills and setter McKenna Reedy ended with 17 assists.&#8220;I&#8217;m proud of the girls.
