Defense propels Berwick football past West Scranton

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Breaking into the offensive zone on an odd-man rush, Garrett Wilson lifted his foot and faked a shot.</p><p>A split second later, Wilson shot it for real, freezing Binghamton goaltender Matt O&#8217;Conner and beating him with a wrist shot for his first goal as a Penguin and contributing to Friday&#8217;s 4-1 win over the Senators.</p><p>The win was the Penguins&#8217; second in a row and marked the seventh consecutive game in which they&#8217;ve held an opponent to just one goal in regulation. Tom Kostopoulos scored the game winner for his 400th point as a Penguin, while Tristan Jarry rebounded from a misplayed puck in the first to stop 20 of 21 shots.</p><p>The win improves the Penguins to 6-1-1-0 on the season and gives them a boost heading into the weekend with two more games.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s huge. You&#8217;re not chasing the rest of the weekend,&#8221; Wilson said of the win. &#8220;Getting two points early sets you up for what could be a great weekend.&#8221;</p><p>After a sluggish start that saw Binghamton take the lead when Jarry mishandled the puck behind the net and had it stripped away by Mike Blunden for a goal, the Penguins pushed back in the second half of the period.</p><p>&#8220;Obviously those are the ones you want back,&#8221; Jarry said. &#8220;We got better as the first period went on and in the second period we came out like ourselves.&#8221;</p><p>While they didn&#8217;t capitalize, the momentum stayed in the Penguins&#8217; favor for the second period. They kept the pressure in the Binghamton end and finally broke through with a goal when Chad Ruhwedel&#8217;s point shot was re-directed by Jake Guentzel, who was posted in front of the crease.</p><p>With the game tied 1-1, Binghamton took a penalty less than two minutes later and the Penguins made their third power play of the night count.</p><p>One again, it was Ruhwedel who got things going with a blast from the point. This time Kostopoulos was posted in front and was able to chip the puck past Binghamton goaltender Matt O&#8217;Connor for a 2-1 lead.</p><p>The score gave the Penguins another surge of momentum heading into the third period.</p><p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t have a good start but we re-grouped,&#8221; head coach Clark Donatelli said. &#8220;It was good to see the momentum change. We have to learn from that.&#8221;</p><p>Wilson kept it going with his wrist shot goal early in the period, and 10 minutes later he made a nice pass to an open Oskar Sundqvist, who blasted a shot from down low to give the Penguins a 4-1 lead.</p><p>Binghamton had a chance to chip away late in the final period when the Penguins were called for subsequent minors, giving the Senators nearly two minutes with a two-man advantage. But it was Jarry who came up big, snaring two shots to keep Binghamton off the board and preserve the 4-1 win.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s more of a team effort,&#8221; Jarry said about the Penguins penalty kill. &#8220;The team knows if there is a shot that I&#8217;m going to have it. If something happens, there&#8217;s always one guy left.&#8221;</p><p>NOTES</p><p>- Pittston Area graduate J.P. Waleski, who is in his first season as an AHL linesman, worked his first game at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday.</p><p>- D Tim Erixon (injury), D Stuary Percy (injury), RW Patrick McGrath, C Adam Krause and RW Ryan Haggerty (injury) were scratched for the Penguins.</p><p>- Donatelli said Erixon missed Friday&#8217;s game because of the flu and wasn&#8217;t sure about his status for the rest of the weekend.</p><style>
