SCRANTON &#8212; It&#8217;s been 17 years since Nanticoke played in a district playoff game.Its homecoming was received with an unwelcoming greeting.The fourth-seeded Trojans were outmatched by a robust Scranton Prep team in a 48-14 loss Friday in the District 2 Class 3A football playoffs.Scranton Prep scored seven unanswered touchdowns to set the running clock before first half&#8217;s end. The Cavaliers scored their first four touchdown on drives that totaled a combined 11 plays.&#8220;(Our guys) fought and battled,&#8221; Nanticoke coach Ron Bruza said. &#8220;It means a lot for our seniors to get that extra week. We had a lot of fun. We hit a buzzsaw in Scranton Prep. They have great athletes, and we came up and tried our best.&#8221;Scranton Prep advances to face No. 2 GAR in the district championship next week. The Cavaliers clinched their first-ever district crown last year when they beat Berwick in the Class 3A final.The Cavaliers were led by two 100-yard carriers. Matt Gilmartin carried the ball 12 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Ryan needed only six carries to gain 139 yards, including one rushing and passing touchdown.Nanticoke ended the Cavaliers&#8217; chances at a shutout with two late touchdowns when trailing by 48 points. Eric Jeffries scored two rushing touchdowns as part of a team-best 84 yards on the ground. Jeffries broke down the sidelines for a 64 yards with 8:43 remaining to put the Trojans&#8217; first points on the scoreboard.Nanticoke was held without a first down &#8212; and just 28 yards of total offense &#8212; in the first half.&#8220;We went in the locker room down 41-0 and said, &#8216;Play with pride,&#8217;&#8221; Bruza said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to play for the second half and not roll over and die, you know? We didn&#8217;t question our manhood. We just asked them to come out and battle.&#8221;Sebastian Johnson did not touch the ball until late in the game but garnered 54 yards on six carries.&#8220;We put (Johnson) in late; we have him for the next season,&#8221; Bruza added. &#8220;We tried a lot of things to get some things going to get into a groove.
