Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Chad Ruhwedel proud to come from a military family

<p>Jason Cabinda knew it was coming. Heck, all of Beaver Stadium knew it was coming.</p><p>Iowa is well-known for being very conservative in 18 seasons under Kirk Ferentz. But when the Hawkeyes rushed up to the line on fourth-and-1 on their opening drive Saturday, it screamed quarterback sneak.</p><p>And it was. C.J. Beathard took the snap and immediately tried to surge behind his center with a jump.</p><p>He went backward. Cabinda had crept up from his middle linebacker spot and timed it perfectly, staggering Beathard in mid-air and back to the ground, where Brandon Bell brought him down for a loss.</p><p>Instead of a first down at the Penn State 33, the Nittany Lions took over on downs with a 7-0 lead already in their pocket.</p><p>And while Penn State&#8217;s offense deservedly got much of the attention from the 41-14 win, the defense set the tone early with Cabinda&#8217;s big play.</p><p>&#8220;They went hurry-up, so I figured it was going to be a sneak,&#8221; Cabinda said. &#8220;I crowded the line of scrimmage there and I really just timed it with him. Kind of just happened on instinct.</p><p>&#8220;When you make plays like that, you kind of don&#8217;t really remember how it happened.&#8221;</p><p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/neQ3ecat_YI" height="315" width="560"></iframe></p><p>It was a scene that repeated itself throughout the night. The predictable Hawkeyes got stuffed time and again on short-yardage situations.</p><p>By the end, an Iowa team that prides itself on grinding down opponents with the run game finished with just 30 yards on the ground. The Hawkeyes scored just seven points against Penn State&#8217;s starters and never managed to make it a game.</p><p>A week earlier, Purdue had 46 rushing yards. It marked the first time in Penn State history the Lions held Big Ten opponents under 50 in back-to-back games.</p><p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s our front seven,&#8221; Lions coach James Franklin said. &#8220;It&#8217;s getting our linebackers back. It&#8217;s getting (defensive tackle) Curtis Cothran back. It&#8217;s getting (defensive end Garrett) Sickels back. It&#8217;s the repetitions and the depth that those other guys who had to play bigger roles before got. It&#8217;s the nutrition bar that we&#8217;ve installed because we had some issues in the past where, as the season went on, we lost weight. We&#8217;re gaining weight right now as the year goes on. Good weight and lean mass.</p><p>&#8220;There are a lot of things that are contributing to this, so it&#8217;s not one thing. There are so many things that are going well right now, and we have to keep building on them.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Tackle debates</strong></p><p>Penn State&#8217;s coaches had discussed this very scenario ever since losing Andrew Nelson for the season.</p><p>With their starting right tackle down, they shuffled Brendan Mahon over from the left side and plugged Paris Palmer into Mahon&#8217;s old spot.</p><p>At the midway point of the season, the Lions identified redshirt sophomore Chasz Wright and true freshman Will Fries as the next men up at tackle. And from the sound of it, Franklin and offensive line coach Matt Limegrover were more than prepared to pull Fries&#8217; redshirt if there another injury hit.</p><p>As fate would have it, Mahon exited right at the start of Saturday&#8217;s game with an apparent ankle injury and did not return. But the Lions were able to keep Fries on the sideline &#8212; with his extra year of eligibility still intact &#8212; as Wright played the rest of the way at right tackle.</p><p>&#8220;There was a lot of conversation on the sideline,&#8221; Franklin confirmed after the game, indicating that it wasn&#8217;t a clear-cut decision. And it&#8217;s one that will likely be revisited this week depending on Mahon&#8217;s availability.</p><p>&#8220;With Mahon not being able to play today, is he going to be able to play next week?&#8221; Franklin said. &#8220;How does that affect Fries as well? I&#8217;ve talked to both (Fries and Wright). I know they&#8217;re always ready to play. Fries is ready to play. But every game that goes on later in the season makes it a harder decision.&#8221;</p><p>Wright had previously been at guard because his footwork could be a liability out on the edge against Big Ten pass rushers. He is Penn State&#8217;s biggest player at 6-foot-7 and &#8220;a cheeseburger away from 350&#8221; pounds, according to Franklin.</p><p>For the most part, he held his own against the Hawkeyes, with one notable exception coming on a missed assignment that led to a crunching sack of Trace McSorley.</p><p>&#8220;He played with confidence tonight,&#8221; Franklin said of Wright. &#8220;That shows the depth that we&#8217;re starting to create. Coach Limegrover has done a great job. I&#8217;m really proud of Chasz Wright. He&#8217;s been waiting for his opportunity and working hard.</p><p>&#8220;And when the opportunities have come, him and Paris have really stepped up big time for us. Losing Nellie and losing Mahon, and having those two come in &#8212; we would have never been able to do that a year ago or two years ago.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Up next</strong></p><p>Penn State&#8217;s path to a wholly unexpected 10-win regular season &#8212; and a potential berth in a prestigious New Year&#8217;s Six bowl game &#8212; has opened up.</p><p>Of the three remaining games, Saturday&#8217;s looks to be the toughest, a road trip to sleepy Bloomington to take on Indiana. Kickoff will be at noon on ABC.</p><p>This season the Hoosiers (5-4, 3-3) had seemed to find an effective defense under new coordinator Tom Allen, one to match an offense that has been successful for head coach Kevin Wilson.</p><p>But the last two games &#8212; wins over Maryland and Rutgers &#8212; have resembled the shootouts that Indiana has been dealing with for much of the past decade. The Hoosiers survived the Terrapins 42-36 before having to rally against the lowly Scarlet Knights on Saturday for a 33-27 win.</p><p>If the Lions can pull that one out, they close on the road at Rutgers and then at home against free-falling Michigan State. Both teams are winless in Big Ten play and 2-7 overall.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re talking about writing a story,&#8221; Lions star Saquon Barkley said. &#8220;And the pencil&#8217;s in our hands. Three more games.&#8221;</p><style>
