Coach accused of sexting students headed to higher court on charges

<p>NANTICOKE &#8212; &#8220;OK, we&#8217;re gonna push our gas pedal,&#8221; instructor Tara Hughes told about 20 enthusiastic exercisers.</p><p>But there were no cars inside the Area Agency on Aging&#8217;s Rose Tucker - Nanticoke Center on a recent Thursday morning.</p><p>&#8220;Pushing the gas pedal&#8221; meant flexing your foot against the resistance of a stretch band, while holding your leg straight, and it was just one of many ways participants in the &#8220;Seniorcize&#8221; class gave their arms, legs and torsos a workout.</p><p>&#8220;I love this class,&#8221; said Marion Samselski, 84, of Nanticoke. &#8220;You feel better when you get out of here, I tell you.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It makes you feel wonderful,&#8221; said Louise Manchio, 83, of Wilkes-Barre. &#8220;I&#8217;m here every Tuesday and Thursday. I will not miss this class.&#8221;</p><p>While movements such as stepping side to side or pointing a foot in a circular fashion toward the numbers on an imaginary clock face are designed to help seniors with their balance, Hughes said the exercisers derive an emotional benefit from the class as well.</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a sense of community with everybody doing the same thing and enjoying it together,&#8221; said the instructor, who is 41 years old and works as a rehab technician at Birchwood Nursing Center. &#8220;A lot of people exercise just for that.&#8221;</p><p>Barbara Wolfe, 75, of Nanticoke, said she used to take part in the YMCA&#8217;s Silver Sneakers program, which she considers more vigorous than Seniorcize, but after spending three weeks in the hospital recovering from an infection, she is grateful for this more gentle program, during which people spend part of each class exercising while sitting in chairs.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s helping to build me back up,&#8221; she said, noting that she lives very close to the center on East Green Street and &#8220;It would be a waste&#8221; not to take advantage of an Active Adult Center right in her neighborhood.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve had two heart surgeries and a broken foot and, you know, they encourage you to exercise after that,&#8221; said Verneda Pajor, 83, of Nanticoke. &#8220;I find this class is very good for me. It keeps you moving.&#8221;</p><p>Director Gail Voyton said the Rose Tucker - Nanticoke Center offers several exercise classes during the week and Seniorcize, which is offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, is among the most popular. &#8220;It&#8217;s really blossomed over the past three years,&#8221; she said.</p><p>The center will add yet another exercise program, Geri-Fit, in January. Activities at the Rose Tucker -Nanticoke Center are open to local residents age 60 and older. You do not have to live in Nanticoke, Voyton said. &#8220;We have people coming from Hanover Township, Wilkes-Barre and Larksville,&#8221; she said.</p><style>
