Letter to the Editor: Something about proposed Wilkes-Barre budget doesn’t add up

<p>World COPD Day will be held Nov. 16 to honor those who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and those who have lost their battle to COPD.</p><p>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the third-leading cause of death and the second-leading cause of disability in the United States.</p><p>&#8220;By 2020 it is expected that the cost of medical care for adults with COPD will be more than $90 billion,&#8221; according to information supplied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. &#8220;Programs such as Medicare and Medicaid have paid for most of the national health-care cost related to COPD. The impact on the economy is also felt by employers who reported almost $4 billion in absentee costs in 2010.&#8221; </p><p>Early and proper diagnosis are essential to not only improved patient outcomes, but also decreased health-care costs. Research, education and awareness also are essential.</p><p>Determine your risk for COPD by taking a <a href="http://www.drive4copd.org/AreYouAtRisk/TaketheScreener.aspx" target="_blank">five-question screener</a> at DRIVE4COPD.org.</p><p>Pulmonary rehabilitation is very important in helping an individual with COPD to exercise, as well as to provide guidance regarding other aspects of living with the disease.</p><p>As a face of COPD and an advocate, I fight not only for myself, but also for others who live daily with COPD. Get involved.
