King’s defense leads charge in Mayor’s Cup victory

DALLAS TWP. &#8212; Multiple times this season, Misericordia had been in position to make a play and be set up for a victory before falling short.On Saturday, the Cougars found themselves in that role once again. But this time, on senior day at Mangelsdorf Field, the 20 soon-to-be graduates weren&#8217;t going to let the team come out on the short end.Misericordia scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:11 left in the game, then got a big stop defensively to defeat FDU-Florham 40-36, closing things out with the first win of the season.&#8220;It&#8217;s not the way that we wanted the season to turn out obviously, but we worked all season and talked about how big this game was for us. Finishing it out for the seniors, this is our last one,&#8221; senior quarterback Jeff Krisiak said. &#8220;And for the underclassmen, this is a good way to start the offseason.&#8221;Trailing by three points, the Cougars got the ball with 5:09 to go, and the seniors took over. Krisiak completed eight of 10 passes for 67 yards on the scoring drive, with three completions going to fellow senior Colton Pyne. The go-ahead score was hauled in by sophomore Sam Gillison from 12 yards out giving Misericordia a four-point lead.&#8220;Coach speaks about the process all the time and he says finish games out no matter what the score. That&#8217;s what I was thinking, just finish the process,&#8221; said Krisiak, who finished 26 of 36 for 284 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a game-high 91 yards and a touchdown.&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t looking at the scoreboard. I was just trusting in the process and our team and putting us in an opportunity to win the game.&#8221;But the game was still far from over because the Devils had been in close games this season as well, coming out on top in wins over Wilkes and Lycoming.They got the ball back with 1:08 to go on their own 32, but the Misericordia defense forced a turnover on downs in four plays to secure the win. It gave the Cougars their third victory in five all-time meetings against FDU, accounting for three of the school&#8217;s four wins in its five-year history.What made the win impressive for the Cougars was the way they bounced back after seeing a double-digit lead slip away late. After Clayton Vleck rushed into the end zone for the third time with 50 seconds left in the third quarter, Misericordia was up 33-21.Then FDU began its comeback. On its next drive, FDU put together a 72-yard drive to pull within 33-28. The Cougars went for the knockout blow on their two next drives, trying to convert fourth-and-short three times but coming up short on two of them.An interception by Misericordia&#8217;s Jared Henn rescued the team after the first turnover on downs. But the second one gave the Devils great field position. Five plays later, they led 36-33 with 5:14 to go.&#8220;I just figured we came here to win and let&#8217;s go for it (on the fourth downs),&#8221; Misericordia coach Mark Ross said. &#8220;The kids came together, put together drives and made the plays. And it speaks a lot about them.&#8221;Misericordia&#8217;s lone win this season came nearly a year after its last victory when it defeated Wilkes on Senior Day in 2015, holding on late for a dramatic seven-point win.&#8220;I kinda made a point to the younger guys to make sure you do everything you can to make sure (the seniors) win on their last opportunity here,&#8221; Ross said. &#8220;Maybe I should make Senior Day Week 1, Week 2, Week 3.
