Kindergarten student organizes awareness event for rare disease she has

<p>NANTICOKE - The Transfiguration of Our Lord Church held its inaugural Fall Piggie Dinner Sunday, bringing in more than 30 guests within its first hour.</p><p>The piggies &#8212; which generally consist of a mixture of cabbage, pork, onions and rice &#8212; were served with potatoes, vegetables and a diner roll. Various desserts and beverages were also available.</p><p>Event coordinator Arlene Jennings said she has been making the ethnic dish for church events for about 15 years, giving her the idea to coordinate a dinner as a church fundraiser.</p><p>&#8220;I make them for the Myasa Pysna (or pre-Lenten season) and for Easter,&#8221; she said.</p><p>While all the foods for the event were prepared by parishioners, Jennings said her husband, Mark, and friend, Brian Kawczenski, spent most of their day Friday cooking cabbage, while Jennings and others spent roughly four hours making the piggies Saturday.</p><p>&#8220;They take a lot of time,&#8221; she said of the dish, noting the church can serve around 160 dinners for the event. &#8220;Then the piggies run out.&#8221;</p><p>Homemade haluski was also packaged to go.</p><p>Denise Kaminsky and her mother, Helen O&#8217;Bremski, traveled from State College to take part in the event.</p><p>Kaminsky, who has penned a series of children&#8217;s book about the Nittany Lion, donated some of her works for a basket raffle.</p><p>She said her mother spent most of her life just two blocks away from the church, while she and her husband lived in Mountain Top before recently retiring to State College.</p><p>&#8220;We had to come back for the church dinner and to see all of our friends,&#8221; she said as she ate her meal.</p><p>Fourteen baskets were raffled. The basket themes included football, pet supplies, kitchenware, personal care and beauty supplies. Christmas decor were also on display for sale.</p><p>John Johnstone traveled from the Philadelphia area with Nancy Bogdan to attend the dinner. He said he couldn&#8217;t believe how delicious the food was.</p><p>&#8220;They&#8217;re the best pigs in a blanket I ever had,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And the homemade desserts? You don&#8217;t think you have room for it, but you find room.&#8221;</p><p>All proceeds from the event go to the church&#8217;s general fund.</p><style>
