Our Opinion: Division, not President-elect Donald Trump, represents most significant threat to nation’s future

<p>PITTSTON &#8212; An event designed to introduce a new generation to the pipe organ brought nearly 60 people to St. John the Evangelist Church on Sunday.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something new for people to see,&#8221; Mike Sowa, organist at Our Lady of the Eucharist in Pittston, said about the &#8220;Pedals, Pipes and Pizza&#8221; event.</p><p>The event, run by the Pennsylvania Northeast Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, was an extension of a national program run by the guild. It was the seventh local &#8220;Pedals, Pipes and Pizza&#8221; event, each being held at different area churches.</p><p>&#8220;This was the most well attended,&#8221; Sowa said, noting he was delighted with the turn out.</p><p>As Sowa sat at the majestic Kilgen Organ Co. organ in the balcony of the church, emcee Raphael Micca, dean of the PA Northeast chapter of the guild, explained the different stops, pipes and tones of the organ.</p><p>Sowa preformed pieces such as &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221; and &#8220;Trumpet Tune&#8221; to highlight Micca&#8217;s narration.</p><p>The organ was built in the 1920s by Kilgen and rebuilt by Crossan-Savage Organ Co. in the 1980s, thanks to the Organ Reform Movement.</p><p>Sowa said the organ has just under 2,000 individual pipes and approximately 30 ranks, or sets, of pipes.</p><p>Ann Irvin, of Pittston, asked how the stops and keys of the organ connect to the pipes.</p><p>&#8220;Now? Electronically,&#8221; Dr. Peter Picerno, director of the music ministry at St. Stanislaus Cathedral, Scranton, said. &#8220;It used to be done by levers.&#8221;</p><p>Amy Riley, of Kingston, brought her son, Jack, 13, to the event. For the Rileys, the event allowed them to learn about the history of the pipe organ, which can be found in most Catholic churches throughout the diocese.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s complex,&#8221; Amy said. &#8220;You hear it every week at church and don&#8217;t appreciate the instrument.&#8221;</p><p>Jack has played piano for four years. Amy admits she and her husband aren&#8217;t musical, but her mother has pushed Jack to learn the piano and saxophone.</p><p>Learning about the sections of the organ at St. John&#8217;s was Jack&#8217;s favorite part of the day. Sowa added there are three sections to the organ &#8212; the swell, great and choir.</p><p>&#8220;But each organ can be modified,&#8221; Sowa said.</p><p>Kyra Hodgins, 10, of Dunmore, Christina Alessin, 9, of Exeter, and Adele Ryder, 9, of Forty Fort, were interested in the musical games Micca had prepared.</p><p>Hodgins plays piano, and she said she was surprised how many keys the organ has compared to her instrument of choice.</p><p>&#8220;The organ has many pipes,&#8221; Adele added.</p><p>Though the games and pizza were the draw for the trio, they all said they had fun learning about the organ.</p><style>
