Prosecutor: Towing company dumped evidence in exhaust case

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — A prosecutor says a towing company has destroyed a key piece of evidence against a Pennsylvania woman trying to kill herself and her two young children with vehicle exhaust: The car itself. Luzerne County First Assistant District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce (sang-weh-DOHL'-chay) told a judge Tuesday that Melissa Scholl's car was destroyed by Act Truck and Trailer of Wilkes-Barre, which was supposed to maintain the impounded vehicle. A man who answered the company's phone Wednesday declined comment. Scholl's attorney, Larry Kansky, wants a judge to dismiss the charges. He contends Scholl never started the car after allegedly running a hose into the car from its exhaust last December, but says an onboard computer that could prove that no longer exists. The judge gave both attorneys 10 days to submit more arguments and evidence before he rules.
